Pete’s Taverna Restaurant and Bar — Restaurant in Town of Riverhead

How did I miss this place for a year? Stumbled across it today with a bit of hesitation because if there's one thing that does not exist on the North Fork is good Greek food. Saw the flags, looked it up - figured let's give it a try.

The three of us shared a lamb stifado, a lamb souvlaki (see the pattern?) and the wings with latholemono, the Greek cooking trinity of lemon, olive oil and oregano. The stifado was outstanding, a large portion of lamb shank accompanied by perfectly cooked and seasoned orzo with a tomato based sauce. The lamb souvlaki was tender and well seasoned, not gamy in the least. And the wings? I've had wings every which way, but hadn't ever had them seasoned Greek style. After today, I don't know why nobody ever thought of it before.

The food was excellent. Portion sizes were exactly right, not a ton of food but enough so that nobody was leaving hungry (and someone was taking food home with them). The prices were good, about what you'd expect for the quality and portion of food that we received. The service was very attentive and friendly. So far, so good.

Their patio is wonderfully landscaped and makes for a great spot to stop and grab a bite and a drink. Unfortunately, we were driving so the drinking part will have to happen some other time, but we'll definitely be back.

Glad to see a good Greek restaurant this far east again! I wish them luck because...

We had a wonderful experience at Pete’s Taverna Restaurant and Bar in Riverhead! From the start, we were warmly welcomed by Andreas, who not only greeted us kindly but also shared some great local tips about the neighborhood. The highlight of our evening, however, was the outstanding service from Autumn. With her beautiful smile, she was attentive, quick, super friendly, and truly professional all night long.
