Want to experience the pleasure of authentic Italian cuisine without the fuss of flying across the ocean? Definitely save the time and money and head for Mama Rosa's on Rt. 100, in Somers, NY. A friend, who lives in the area, recommended it, and we dined there on Sunday night. As an Italian who grew up eating real home cooking, I can attest that everything was perfection. If you’re a traditionalist, try the flavorful veal parmesan. But if you're looking for a unique treat, order the Fiocchi Con Pere- pasta stuffed with pear and reggiano parmesan cheese sautéed in prosciutto and peas in a cream sauce; your taste buds will sing.

Portions are large but reasonably priced. You will want to leave room for dessert. Order a few for the table and share. This way everyone can enjoy the delicious dulce.

My husband and I were anxious to try Mamma Rosa because we heard a lot of good things about it. We were not impressed. First, everything is a la carte. They do have price fixe options, but you are not getting any bargains with them. Dinner does not even come with a little salad. Portions were not large. They were okay, but much smaller than other Italian restaurants in the area. The fried calamari was so greasy that my husband (who loves calamari) would not eat it. In fact, another couple who was having dinner at a table near ours volunteered that they too could not eat the calamari because it was too greasy. Refills on sodas are not free. They charge full price for a refill. Service was very good, but that was the only very good part of our visit. Not good enough for me to want to return....

Mamma Rosa is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you feel like family. Rigo and his wife, Adilia, were absolutely lovely--true examples of great owners who care about their guests and their food. I had the Chicken Parmigiana, and it was outstanding crispy, perfectly cooked chicken, smothered in rich marinara and delicious cheese. Every bite was perfection! The portions are generous, and the flavors are authentic and fresh. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the service is top-notch.
