We were on our way through town on a Friday, so a Wisconsin Fish Fry is always a great choice. Finding a local venue with fish specials on Friday isn’t difficult in central Wisconsin, and we were in luck when we found Whiskey River.
We stopped around noon and it wasn’t busy. Seems more like a dinner restaurant option. The lady at the bar, Peggy, was also our waitress and no doubt a hard worker.
We ordered the pan fried walleye and the breaded cod - not the beer bartered. The breaded was probably a lighter batter but was still a batter. We thought it would be more of a crust type coating. It wasn’t but it also wasn’t a disappointment. It was very good. It almost had a fresh water taste.
The walleye was a good size but it was a little fishy tasting. We know that can be hit or miss sometimes and not the restaurants fault. It was seasoned and coated well.
German potato salad was tart and could have been cooked a little more. The potatoes were a little hard so not quite done. But again, it was early in the day and would prob use a little more cooking to be the way we’d like it.
The rye bread was really fresh and soft. Tasted great. Also served with Cole slaw. I didn’t have any but my husband didn’t really care for the flavor.
The table had a large container of tartar sauce which is always a nice gesture. There were other condiments as well.
Peggy left a pitcher of water on the table which made drinking as much as we wanted easy. Thanks for that!!
We’d stop again. Prices were very reasonable for the portion. Nice,...

I visited this restaurant at the recommendation of a colleague who is good friends with the owner. I had heard great things about the food and Friday fish fry. Just having moved to town, I thought I'd try a new restaurant. The meal was decent. I had a fish sandwich and potato salad with a lemonade to drink. Service was decent. The bill came to just over $8.00, but to my surprise I was also charged a service charge of 99 cents which brought my bill to $9.36. why? I still left a $2.00 tip because I believe in tipping for decent service. However, I do not think service fees should be added to my bill unless I come with a large group which would then be common practice among most restaurants. I planned to use this restaurant for my organization's board retreat, but a simple 99 cent service fee blew that. It is the principle. As I mentioned the service was decent, but I sure did get the looks and stares from customers. Not one spoke but all of them stared. I found that odd and...
Read moreYou don't want to miss this place. Decided to eat here based upon reviews. As we drove up to the parking lot, it was packed. That's a good sign on a Friday night. When you walk in, you're at the bar, and the dining room is beyond the bar. You can eat from the same menu no matter where you sit -- bar or dining room. We were seated as soon as we walked in. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable about their menu, and have great suggestions on local brews. The food was with worth waiting for -- which was'nt long. Average time. We were so pleased with our choices for dinner -- breaded perch and ribeye steak sandwich. The experience was pleasant. If we didn't have we a 2 1/2 hour ride ahead of us, we would have moved to the bar and spent a little more time. If you like local food and brews, and enjoy the comfort and ease of a neighborhood place, this is where you should go. Midnight Star from Bulls Farms was my hubby's choice of beer. Local brewery and we hit the store nearby to pick up more for the...
