This is my second review of Pleasant Lake Inn - located in the Southern Adirondacks.
I was lucky enough to be in the area to experience their annual Oktoberfest! They make a big assortment of wonderful German food and lots of Oktoberfest style beers.
Wanting to try as much as I could, I went for what they call “The Unity Platter”. This dish comes with: Beef sauerbraten - Gail (owner and host) told me they brine it for a week, then slow steam/braised overnight. It was delicious with a rich beef flavor and a nice tangy note and a nice gravy bathing it.
A knockwurst and bratwurst - two plump sausages. Both were juicy, perfectly cooked and went great with the side of German mustard.
Pork Schnitzel - IMHO - this was the star of the plate. Don’t get me wrong, the sauerbraten and sausages were very tasty - but the schnitzel was perfectly breaded, nicely crispy and the gravy paired well with it. I could have had seconds (or thirds ;-)
The dish (like all the specials) came with 2 different sauerkrauts - a red and white - both seasoned well and a nice complement to the rich meats. I went with the German potato salad which was both creamy and chunky - delish. The cold cucumber salad was also top notch, slices of chilled cukes with some thin sliced onions in a light salty/sweet sauce.
Believe me, I couldn’t finish the meal in one sitting (I had the leftovers for lunch the next day :-)
My wife went with her favorite dish at PLI - the Captains Platter - a selection of breaded and fried haddock, shrimp and sweet clams.
She did have some of my Unity Platter
If you do decide to go on a weekend (we were there on a Wednesday night) reservations are highly recommended - although hanging at the warm, comfy bar area with a cold German brew...

We had reservations for 5:30 and found a mostly full bar and about 5 people in the dinning area. We were pointed to a table for 2 and the waitress arrived after about 5 minutes with menus and took drink orders. She returned with drinks and read the specials My wife asked her about a couple of them and the answer were mostly I'm not sure but It comes with either rice or potato and vegetable. My wife ordered the fish special and I order the steak from the menu. Salads arrived and then waitress return to tell us that the fish special was not available and the only other fish choice was broiled in a scampi butter. So why was a fish fry on the special board? We accepted the broiled substitution. That was it FOR AN HOUR. No bread or rolls Just an hour looking at my lovely wife. Our meals finally arrive. My steak was OK but I will not drive back for another and the fish was cooked OK but just laying in some sort of broth. There was enough broccoli on my plate for 3 tables well maybe only 2 tables. Just a poor...
