This place was recommended to me by a friend a while ago, and while I was in the area I thought I should give it a stop. TLDR, it's a bar that has great wings for a good price.
(They are clean and abide by all pandemic guidelines, masks and social distancing are mandatory)
Pulling up I wasn't sure if it was a house or a nondescript building, it certainly didn't look like a restaurant. But once you park and walk through the aging green door, You're greeted by what can I only imagine as American '80s charm. Atm and Phone booth are in the entryway and past that is a very old bare bones bar. But every customer seems happy and and cheery.
The menu is small, and everyone who I chatted with told me that you got to go for the wings, 1 pound, (14-18 wings) for 10$. Everyone also told me that the dry rub was the best. So I gave it a shot, waiting about 15 minutes as the chef listened to death metal and worked his magic. Once I got the wings I hit the road again and the smell of the wings overpowered me and I started snacking on them in the car.
The are great, they taste as if you made them yourself with care and love and attention, but also had a secret recipe from your family that told you how to make it perfectly and delicious. Are these the best wings in Madison? Maybe, they're certainly up there. But The amount of wings really sells it on how great they are. There are some other upscale bars downtown that make just as amazing wings, but you get three of them for six bucks. The value and the home cooked flavor are what really set these apart. Also if you're a blue cheese fan they have some of the best blue cheese that I have ever tasted.
I can't wait to come back with a few of my friends, drink, eat some wings and have a grand old time. Once that's...
Read moreI was excited to try their wings, there's so many good reviews..Here's the thing about good reviews in Wisconsin, don't trust them. Most people in this state haven't ventured outside of a 20 mile radius, that's apparent here. Your sauce is unlike any buffalo sauce I've ever had, and not in a good way.
From the dry rub to your buffalo they both had a lingering sweet taste and smell along with some kind of floral note. Let me help you with a better sauce recipe.
Buffalo sauce - melt some butter, put garlic in it and warm on low until it's fragrant, remove from heat. Add Frank's, dash of celery salt and hit it with an immersion blender until bright orange and emulsified. If you want a touch of sweet then add honey but not too much.
Blue cheese sauce - take 3/4 of your blue cheese, add buttermilk, add chives, cream, mayo, blend on low until smooth. Crumble your remaining blue cheese in and stir. Salt to taste. Don't you dare sweeten this.
Ranch - hidden valley powder seasoning, buttermilk, sour cream, mayo, whisk together.
More issues: your men's restroom soap dispenser was out of soap so you have patrons and your cook spreading God knows what. The soap dispenser is your responsibility, this can make your patrons sick.
People of Wisconsin, try venturing out a bit more so you have some kind of general idea about how certain foods are...
Read moreWhen you first drive up to the place you wonder why you're going to someone's house for dinner when it's supposed to be a restaurant. Honestly, this used to be a house. Inside is somewhat small and if you're there when they're busy (which appears to be all the time) you'll struggle to find a place to sit (or even stand!). That being said they have some of the best wings I've ever eaten.
You can choose between the dry rub and regular sauce. There's a few different varieties of each, but not a million which is nice. Once you decide what you want you head to the bar to order, no table service here. The appetizers are also delicious but really it's the sauces that are top notch here. You get a huge portion of wings for the price and the beer specials are fantastic as well. Make sure you have plenty of napkins and wet wipes (which they provide) because you'll need them. There's no looking glamorous here, everyone is doing the same thing as you and there's no shame.
Four stars only because it is a little crowded and a little "rundown". Not rundown in the sense that you wonder why it hasn't been shut down yet, but in the sense that it's a hole in the wall bar in the middle of farmland in Wisconsin. Everything appeared clean if not sparse, and I would absolutely...
