Solaia was a pleasant surprise for me on my husband’s birthday last week. He chose this restaurant as his preferred location for his birthday dinner and it was a great choice. The service from the moment we were trying to find the right door to enter through bc it was raining to the moment we received our check it was hand and foot. I appreciated that bc the level and attention to detail of service usually predicates how the rest of the night goes.
Calamari Fritti. 10/10 Simple dish executed very well and you can tell the Calamari was fresh. The squeeze of the lemon wedge on top absolutely took it up a notch. Great appetizer. The spicy tomato sauce that pairs with this is EXCELLENT.
Endive Gorgonzola Insalata. 8/10 I appreciated this salad bc of my time in Belgium when I played professional basketball. The endive is bitter, the Gorgonzola is sour and fatty, the balsamic glaze was sweet as well as the walnuts that added to the texture. My only criticism was I needed another soft delicate lettuce (butter crisp maybe) to compliment the endives and that would’ve made this a 10/10 for me.
Roasted Artichoke Hearts. 10/10 First time really having authentic Italian Artichoke Hearts and I WANT MORE. The way they fanned out the hearts at the end was so aesthetically pleasing. The garlic and oil was robust but it was so good. The stems were more hardier than the delicate tender leaves. I’ve been thinking about this dish since we left.
Mushroom Risotto w Jumbo Shrimp. 10/10 My goodness the mushroom flavor was STRONG and I’m convinced now that I pondered on it a for a few days that they used dried mushrooms and rehydrated them. The rice was perfect Al Dente. I can come back just for this and a glass of wine. Shrimp were so fresh.
Salmon Dish. My husband got the Salmon Pasta dish that he ate with no complaints. I did not taste it like I normally do but next time.
This was a great meal and I will definitely be a repeat customer. Thank you for a...
Read moreSadly... I would not recommend... It pains me to write bad reviews but this was pretty bad. I am actually surprised at all the good reviews. I wanted tk give 2 stars because they were very nice but the service was also sparse, and the whole experience was seriously lacking for me. I love going to nice restaurants and eating good food. I do it often. I have even been to Italy many times and had WONDERFUL authentic Italian food. This place would have been OK for a $10-15 a plate American-Italian restaurant. Let's start with the appetizer, the scallop special. 3 scallops the size of a quarter, MAYBE a 50 cent piece, in what tasted like watered down hollandaise sauce. It was actually comically small. $24!!?!!!!!!!?!?!! I am used to high prices meals. This was a straight rip off. Lack of bar menu and predictable beer selection you could have had from any pizza shop. Frutta Di Mare with Fra Diavolo sauce? Where was the Diavolo? Honestly, it tasted like they forgot any salt let alone pepper. For the prices and the way the restaurant presents itself I should never have to ask for salt or pepper. Do your customers normally just not understand what Fra Diavolo means?!? I am really bad to write this review as I had really high hopes and hate to cause harm to a mom and pop restaurant like this but what I received for what I paid did not match up. Nice people, poor service, mediocre food at high prices. If you just want a white tablecloth and to feel like you're in a nice restaurant while staying in a very domestic non-exploratory box this will work for you.
Sorry, but it may be time for a new chef and/or a new menu? I wish you luck Solaria but I will not...
Read moreMy wife and I escaped to the Catskills for our 29th anniversary. We made reservations at Solaia for our anniversary dinner.
We began by ordering cocktails. My Manhattan was pure perfection. My wife's Vodka Collins was spot on. We decided on the roasted artichoke hearts as an appetizer. (Pic 1) It comes with 3 on the plate. I have never seen them served like this before. It presented beautifully and this dish was amazing!!!
For dinner, I ordered the Grilled Scallops over Fettuccini. (Pic 2) The scallops were succulent and cooked perfectly. The Fettuccini was superb. There was so much flavor in this dish that I was sad to see it was gone...ok, devoured.
For dessert I ordered the Tiramisu. (Pic 3) This was one of the best I have ever had. It was so delicious and light.
If you find yourself in the Catskills be sure and make reservations at Solaia. (Pic 4) The food is amazing, the atmosphere is beautiful, and the service is simply...
