One of the Last of the Old World, old-time Wisconsin supper clubs! My stepson went for dinner at Feil's last night and immediately texted me about this marvelous club! So, there is nothing to do, but grab my husband and go over for brunch this morning. Feil's did not disappoint!
The decor smacks you in the face, in a good way, when you drive up. Located right on Hwy 73N between Columbus and Randolph, it's not easy to miss as it looks like exactly what it is, a celebration of German heritage in Wisconsin. Inside, it's warm and cozy with beautiful, original European scenes painted on the walls, lots of warm colors, and subdued lighting. There are a couple of Inglenooks and conversation corners built right into the bar! It's quiet and soothing, and there's only one TV in a corner of the room...it wasn't on, and I was happy. It took me 15 minutes to even get out of the bar area because there's so many charming pieces to admire!
Now, let's get to the brunch buffet. Nice salad bar with fresh fruit and veggies and several lovely little dessert choices, assuming you have room for them. The brunch menu included Denver scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, baked ham, broasted chicken, biscuits and gravy, baked pork loin, mixed veggies, and French toast made from Feil's homemade bread! We each had a bit of everything and never even got as far as the omelet station; which I will remedy the next time we visit. The food was excellent;nothing fancy, good home cooking. We enjoyed mimosas, oj, and great coffee.
Our server, Malcolm, was attentive but didn’t hover. He has lovely manners!
Overstuffed, over satisfied, and over the moon, we began to consider heading home. But first, our hostess, Joann Randall, who should really should be called The Docent, showed me various points of interest back in the bar. There was a huge display of original owner, Herb Feil's, Packers memorabilia, a corner nook showcasing the Feil's one millionth loaf of bread with a wrapper from the original bakery in Germany! Over the hostess stand is a beautiful German cuckoo clock, purchased by Herb Feil's son and current owner, Terry Feil, and his wife on their latest trip to Germany. It is stunning! Joann also pointed out neat little designs worked into the plaster by the artisan plaster worker, who told Herb that he was bored and, consequently, plastered chicken motifs throughout the restaurant! Supposedly, there are thirteen of them, but I only found two.
If you're a fanatic Wisconsin history buff, as I am, a German history buff, ditto, and a lover of great food and great ambiance, Feil's Supper Club in Randolph is a place...
Read morePlease take this 1 star as a negative 5 star. We had a terrible experience here. The salad had brown rotten lettuce. The drinks took over 15 minutes to get. The food came out cold on all four meals. The jaeger schnitzel was ice cold So we sent it back. One minute later the same plate came out of the microwave and was then over cooked. So we told the waitress we didn’t want it. The scallops were also not good so I told the waitress that and she said I’ll take that off and took the plate. Then proceeded to charge for them. We asked if she was taking it off and she said no. I said then why did you take my full plate of food and charge me for it if I didn’t get to eat it. Then the cook came out and said “so you have a problem with my food?” We said not necessarily a problem, it just was cold and then microwaved and over done so we didn’t want it. She said ok. And stood very close to us, non masked. And we said ok? As she still just stood there staring at us. She finally walked away. Then when the waitress came out I asked why did the cook just come out and ask us if we had a problem?. She said oh because I told her the issues you had. I said ok but that was extremely unprofessional. Then I asked who the manager is and she said the cook is the manager. I said oh ha ok. Then the cook came back out and said so you have a problem with my restaurant?. I said yes I do. First off you came out here un masked and were face to face w us/too close to us. So you’re not following regulations. Second, you came out here asking if we had a problem with our food and then just stood there and we didn’t say anything. We were paying our bill for the food. The cook/manager was literally yelling and verbally harassing us. She rolled up her apron and looked like she was going to get physical. We were getting up to leave and she was standing in our way. So I told her to walk away from us and to have a great weekend. Then she followed us all the way out yelling things to us and said “like we didn’t already have a bad enough year” ok well that’s no ones fault. It’s a global pandemic. How about you don’t make a scene in front of your ENTIRE restaurant all because we professionally sent the food back as it wasn’t good. She came out very defensive to begin with and handled the situation completely wrong and unprofessional. The food is also extremely expensive. The quality meets McDonald’s. Don’t even step...
Read moreI've been going to Feil's for years now. I love their salad bar and many entrees I have had have been very good. That is why I am rating them 4 stars - based on all of my combined experiences.
With that said, my trip last Sunday night was the worst of my experiences to date. I had a hankering for corned beef and cabbage given it was St. Patty's Day weekend. Feil's was running a special! I was excited, only to be delivered a luke warm plate with what tasted like, and appeared to be, roast beef...not corned beef. There was no 'corned' flavor about it. I had my guest try some and she agreed that it was NOT corned beef. Also, some of the potatoes were hard and cool in the middle while others were hot and 'rubbery'. I feel like my dinner was nuked in a microwave and not cooked and that I got roast beef instead of corned beef. Granted, corned beef is an Irish dish and not German so what did I expect? I wouldn't go to a Chinese restaurant and expect to get good Mexican food. Also, the soup on the salad bar was Tomato Bisque. Bisque is cream based and in this case, the cream had been burned. You can tell when the cream has been burned because the entire soup gets a somewhat burnt flavor to it. There was no doubt in my mind that the soup had been overcooked.
My advice would be to definitely go to Feil's if you can. It is a nice drive from the Madison area and most everything I have ever had there has been good (minus my last trip). I hope I just caught them on an off night and my last trip doesn't become the new 'normal'. So, yes, I will be back. Just stick with the regular German menu...
