I play in a volleyball league at Loopy’s and therefore I am typically there at least once a week.
The food at Loopy’s is standard American pub fare, and it’s typically very good. I recommend the hand-tossed pizza, heaping mound of beef nachos, and the Friday fish fry. Fish tacos are delicious, and the BLT, featuring a full pound of bacon, is great. Prices are competitive, and portions are generous.
The service is usually good, however Friday nights can get busy and from time-to-time you might be there opposite a party. The staff is always friendly, and the job Donna does is outstanding.
One thing that really sets Loopy’s apart from a generic hunting-lodge type establishment is the setting. Loopy’s is situated above the banks of the Chippewa River, and a large deck and fully-stocked tiki bar provide a breathtaking view of the water and the wildlife that inhabit it. Bald Eagles are a common sight.
On Saturday afternoons from May thru October Loopy’s is a common destination for wedding parties to stop in for lunch or drinks and a chance to get their picture taken on the riverbank and in the giant Leinenkugel’s Adirondack chair.
I have observed Loopy’s to be a great place for out-of-town youth teams playing in local tournaments to stop for lunch or dinner. There’s a lot of room to spread out. The three volleyball courts and several bean-bag toss games will keep the young entertained while the less-motivated can relax around the fire ring or picnic table with a cold one. There is also a large party tent, so rain isn’t something you need to plan around and shade is available. Jimmy Buffett would feel right at home there, even if he had his kids’ little-league team along. (Hammock not included.)
In the summer months Loopy also offers shuttles and equipment to canoe, kayak, or tube-float the Chippewa River. I have two young sons and can verify that it is family-friendly, although one time we did paddle away from a group to avoid listening to their colorful language. Showers are available onsite. A word of advice: Call ahead and ask about the river conditions; the power utility controls the dam and the float can get slow sometimes. A 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hour trip is fairly typical. FATFAR is a big float party that takes place on Father’s Day. I’ve never been able to justify leaving my family to do this, but it sounds like a lot of unwholesome fun. (I don’t believe that this event that is appropriate for anyone under 21.)
When the weather turns cold, something really awesome and unique happens. A GIANT FABRIC DOME is set-up and inflated right over the volleyball courts, tiki bar, and deck area! It is climate controlled with heat provided by underground hot water, which makes the sand feel warm on your feet! In addition to leagues on Sunday-Thursday nights, Loopy hosts several volleyball tournaments on Saturdays, otherwise the courts are generally available for open play – if you are bringing a group call ahead so they know to turn the heat on.
Sunday football at Loopy’s leans toward being adult-oriented. You can watch the Packers and usually the Bears and Vikings, and the Bloody Marys are outstanding; served with sausage, cheese, and other garnish they are almost a meal unto themselves. There is usually a free buffet served at halftime. For big games he sets up a projector and large screen in the dome, but the regular bar has plenty of televisions so there really isn’t a bad seat in the house.
Overall Loopy’s is a fun place. In addition to very good food and service, the site and amenities make it a great year-round destination for visiting families as well as people passing thru the area. Access to Loopy’s is easy, especially from Wisconsin Highway 29 or US Highway 53. Look for the yellow signs with...
Read moreEdit: The sarcasm is evident and just a continued show of the unprofessionalism. The idea of “trying to find us after having no idea we would climb up to a 70 mile an hr road” has no bearing and is not at all what was stated in the complaint. Though on that note, we were instructed to do on the phone call ,as it was the nearest available road. AND furthermore we walked to the “two lane on the loopys side of the river” to be retrieved. The only thing up by the highway were the tubes as we were not going drag them along the side of the busy highway to get to a safe location. In a lightning storm. We were not warned of weather at all or told what to do in leu of it happening. But were told when we returned “if it was me I would not have sent you out. ” by the manager himself. The point of the review being, in aspect after aspect the incompetence and unprofessionalism of the Loopys crew turned a bad situation into an absolute catastrophe. I stand by my review.
If i could give zero stars or negative stars for that matter I would. We were sent out with a storm coming. Rented two tubes and a cooler. Asked specifically how to purchase ice for the cooler and were told “it comes filled” when we arrived to the river not only was the cooler empty but also busted so it didnt close properly. This was just the beginning. Protocol was not followed and therefore we ended up in a river with lightning striking around us. When we were finally able to get off the river and up to a major highway calling loopys. Was told they would send someone in about 15 min. We were a two minute drive away. Called three times as time went by and went by and went by was told “it will be about 15 minutes” all three times. An hour later finally a vehicle arrives. Was told “since we didnt collect an id the guys made one pass and couldnt find you so they went home”. Then had to drive around trying to figure out how to get the tubes. Because those were what was important at that point. Not the lightning storm we had to walk through to get to an overpass and be out of the lightning and rain. An hour and a half later we finally arrive back at loopys. Spoke with a manager which ended with “best I could do is give you some discount tickets for the future” We obviously WILL NOT be coming back. Not in anyways useful to us. Thanks loopys for a mortifying life threatening experience and the unprofessionalism...
Read moreWhen I walked in and up to bar, the bartender was helping someone else. When she finished with them, she said she'd be a minute and she went to take an order from a table. I took a seat at another table because we were there for pool league night. The bartender came to my table and did not ask if she could get me anything. Instead she asked if I was with the group at the bar. When I answered with a puzzled, "No," she curtly told me that the table where I was sitting was reserved for the group at the bar. Then she walked away.( The group she indicated never came to that table) Around 7:30, I went to the bar to order appetizers. Cheese curds and "World famous Nachos." My total was $28.38. I paid cash. While we waited, another party said that they had a really long wait for their food. I overheard the bartender tell the they had an unexpected group of 20 people come in. Okay. So I now know OUR order might take a bit. At 9:40(!) our apps still hadn't come. A huge Leinies group came in. I watched to see if anyone would get food. Within 15 minutes a large tray with baskets of food came out. Then out came a pizza. I was not happy about this. I went back to the bar and requested a refund. I explained to her that two hours is too long to wait. She asked me, "Your order never came out?" She asked what we ordered so she could look it up. I reminded her and she said okay. Apparently, I was watching a pool game when she brought my refund because I looked down at the table and in front me was some money. She didn't even tell me she brought it. She didn't apologize for us not getting our food at all. It felt like she had a problem with me, personally, by not waiting on me to begin with, by not asking if she could get me anything and instead making me move from a table where no one sat, not bringing my order, and not even acknowledging the return of my money. (Even if one assumed the food was brought out by someone else, a server should check to see if everything is satisfactory, right?) My first thoughts don't usually go here: but I am a person of color, so perhaps that was her problem. Very bad experience. (P.S. Anyone who knows "Loopy," knows he would never treat a customer like this. He is one of the kindest and best guys.) So...
