I've seen the Monks' bread in the stores for years, but thought it was just a clever name until a few years ago when a friend explained it is actually made by monks at an abbey in Genesee County. My response: "We have an abbey in Genesee County?"
When a friend from Florida was visiting me recently, we decided to go check out the abbey & see what it was all about. The grounds are peaceful and beautiful. No photos are allowed indoors, but it's equally peaceful inside.
The store itself is quite small, but the variety of products is really impressive. I love the raisin bread best, so picked up a loaf of that for a little less than what you would pay in the stores. I also bought some of their dark chocolate chip biscotti. (You can tell the monks made it too - it's so delicious you can almost taste the Holy Spirit!) I have two of their fruit & nut bars in my pantry, but haven't tasted them yet.
