501 Grill & Tavern — Restaurant in Tulpehocken Township

I used to go here a lot many years ago and have gone twice in the last 3 weeks. It hasn't changed a bit and has the most consistently bad service of any place I've ever gone to. It starts with the hostess who is typically in a bad mood and makes you feel as though you are severely inconveniencing her just by walking through the door. Then you get to the servers and they always have an attitude and again make you feel like you are inconveniencing them. I've never had a friendly server here. I would say their food is average. It's nothing out of this world and it's not bad. It's basically what you should expect but it is fairly over priced (especially for the area). You can find significantly better food for a much better price almost anywhere else. If you drink soda, dont do it. Not just because it's bad for you but it tastes like water here. It has been several years since I last had their soda but that part I am just basing on memory. The atmosphere is isn't anything special. It's in an old house which is what you would expect from a small town restaurant. They also charge you for anything and everything they can. Dont expect a small cup of dipping sauce or a few celery sticks with your wings for free. You better believe they're gonna charge you at least 50 cents a piece. This business thrives on the fact that there is no competition in the area. It also makes the place seem better than it is. If another restaurant/bar popped up within a few miles from this place and offered good friendly service, this place would shut down in a few weeks. Service is everything in...

I ordered the house fries, a quesadilla, and app sampler. After an hour and 2 minute wait, I received soggy, flavorless, overcooked fries, and an app sampler that wasn’t overall bad. My quesadilla came, I took 2 bites of dry chicken with a hint of Cajun, and possibly some grated cheese? I told the waitress we wouldn’t like the food anymore, and would like to leave. As expected, she grabbed the manager on duty who said her name was Michelle.(in this time we are sitting at the table, just waiting. Not trying to leave or anything) Michelle immediately asks what’s wrong with the food, I tell her, and she says well, I made that myself so... she then says we would have to pay for what we ate and drank, and would be free to go. Since we only took perhaps 10 collective bites of food, I felt this was unfair. Especially after waiting over an hour. Michelle never apologized, in fact every word that came out of her mouth somehow seemed like she had something against me. She then ignored me when I tried to pay a little bit and tip our waitress, and would not help to process the payment. We gave our waitress a tip and left. Overall, I don’t think I’ve ever had such an explosive, argumentative, or negative restaurant experience. We were completely understanding of any short staffing issues or new hire issues. What cannot be excused is a bad manager, with a bad attitude, and an even badder mouth. Absolutely horrible customer service. My husband and I called for takeout... 40 minutes for 2 overpriced burgers. Walked in, got completely ignored. Told the staff we were waiting on takeout "ok, they'll get to you". Continued to wait. Got home and couldn't feed myself or 1 and a half year old daughter as the medium burgers we ordered were RARE. Called and asked if I could speak with a manager, "yup". Rose got on the phone and I explained the issue and about how uncourteous the girl was who answered the call initially. I got an "ok" and she said "well are you coming back in now?" I said we just got our daughter home and would not be coming back out tonight. She says " well I don't know what you want me to do for you then". I explained she could practice some better customer service, perhaps ask my name and say they would make it up next time we were in. This was when she started to get very loud and very rude. Then she said she was busy and needed to get off the phone.

We will NOT ever be going back and that horrible burger went into the trash ($10 for a small, grocery store patty that was raw). I reccomend anyone who looks to be served by courteous people when they're out to eat and doesn't want to pay for terrible food never step food in...
