This is a great place to eat, a great place to take the family, a great place for Berks County Pa and one of a kind. Nestled in the heart of Dutch Country Pa, be sure to eat here before going to Cabela's or hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
You won't find anything like Kauffman's chicken in a grocery store or a restaurant within 500 miles of it. Let's get a couple of things in order:
This place serves the best chicken within a 3 state radius. People from Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and many other states drive to Kauffman's just because their chicken is that good. I've personally witnessed all of these license plates in their parking lot and on a regular basis. Their chicken is rotisserie which means it is dryer on the outside and moist in the middle ( that's how a good rotisserie is cooked). Their cole slaw has a sweeter flavor to it, that I prefer over any other coleslaw I've had. Their mini golf course is amazing and great exercise after having that chicken dinner. If you have room for ice cream, stop over for dessert afterwards. The scenery is breathtaking. The place is always clean, the restrooms and the back kitchen as well. The food is good. Any of these people who are taking about this place in a somewhat negative way; I got news for you! I've grown up driving almost 2 hours to get to Kauffman's. After moving into the area, I still like this place. I still eat there. Out of the 25+ years I've eaten there, they were always willing to fix any mistake they made and always happy to oblige any reasonable request. So if you have a problem take it to the owner instead of trash talking them on here. I am a local and have eaten up to 4 times a week here ( sometimes more , sometimes less ) , if anyone is qualified or a credible review it is mine. This is the place to go if you want good food at an excellent price.
Locals love it, so do tourists, if you don't love it; around here we have a saying "If you don't have something nice to say, then stay quiet", this includes negative reviews that are unjustified. -Local supporter...
Read moreWow! Kauffman’s is a great spot for a memorable chicken dinner! I say Chicken but in fact they have a variety of other offerings on the menu. This place is on a little country road seemingly in the middle of nowhere. I first heard of it 20 years ago from a client. I happened to live 70 miles away but I tried it out anyway. What a delightful and delicious surprise. That first trip, there was a line out the door. They don’t take reservations but that is ok. The service is old school cafeteria style. You grab a tray and silverware and slide it down the line and you can pick from various desserts and you tell the server behind the counter what main course you would like. A quarter chicken dinner is a good choice but for 25 cents more you can get a half chicken. I get my half with Pennsylvania Dutch potato filling ( like creamy mashed potatoes with stuffing mixed in). You don’t get veggies as they have a salad bar in the dining area which is a small up charge (Worth every penny). You pay for a cup, about $2, and you can fill up on sodas and iced tea self serve style in the dining area. The salad bar has wonderful PA Dutch potato salad, macaroni salad and coleslaw, all of which are creamy and sweet that only the Pennsylvania Dutch know how to do. There is of course salad also, along with wonderful sweet rolls. You pick your own table and bring your tray when done to the trash cans where you dump your trash and deposit your used tray. On your way out in the lobby they have an ice cream stand with soft serve or hard. All of this for 2 will set you back around $25. If you’re up to it, they also have mini golf on the side of the restaurant. Good food ,friendly service and entertainment (golf) all on a beautiful backwoods country road. All in all, worth the trip and a fun...
Read morecafeteria style. all the regulars know that, when it's busy, they'll stand on line for at least awhile, the regulars know it's worth it. I rarely get anything from the cake, pie, jello and pudding cabinet. i like to, but, it's often rather empty when I get to it. I would like to see more in the case... alright, i also don't usually get any 'zert' because I'm stuffed to the gills from my meal. their bbq chicken is excellent the filling is mostly mashed potatoes, and it's good, really good. they have lots of good things on their menu board, which those who, aren't sure or want something other than chicken can have instead. in a big thunderstorm(been that, done there) it's great to go sit on their large veranda, which overlooks a big, beautiful pond - ducks, geese, and usually the pond swan, floating around. I'm writing a book, here! kauffmans, is the place to go for a nice time and real food(no chefs "creations", just good Pennsylvania Dutch food. I've been going there for 36 years and nothing has really changed about the menu. the building is very nice, and clean(all the rooms...) and comfy. lots of chatter, gets a bit loud. it kind of goes with the place...however, there's That veranda...
also: mini golf right outside. and a separate building for your reiunions and such. a beautiful drive, too. no alcoholic beverages(good!) enough! I'm making myself too hungry... there's a drive-in like counter inside with lots of ice cream type goodies, if you can fit' em in...... "i said enough!" ok.
bb, thea/lititz said to add photos...? hank and furbie's kids. familiar, spooky. he's even more sweet...
