Long review because I'm pretty upset about my experience.
Sitting with my son at 4pm and ordered the "king" cut prime rib, he ordered a double cheeseburger and some fries. I also had a cup of soup.
The burger was dry, small, flat, unremarkable, and expensive and was not served with fries - those were a side order and they were mundane and exactly the same stuff that comes off the Sysco truck at every other diner on the East Coast.
The "king" cut prime rib was barely a dismally small, TERRIBLY over-salted, and was served only with a potato choice - no other vegetable or side, or salad. For $21.99.
There were probably four other tables being served when we were there. Our waitress was obviously unhappy, snippy, and could not raise a smile on her face if her life had depended upon it. She walked past us several times and didn't take note that drink refills were needed, nor did she stop to ask, "Would you care for a refill?" She was not, by any stretch of the imagination, solicitous of her customers.
During this meal, there was a party in the back room with several children that ranged in age from approximately 12 on downwards. The girls were apparently charged with the task of entertaining and chasing down their 4-year-old brother or cousin. This child was running through the restaurant, around tables, and kept getting dangerously close to the "fireplace." A customer or waitress could very easily have tripped over this rampant child, and this now seems to be "the norm" in restaurants. I have waited my share of tables during my lifetime, and a child running through the dining room is a serious hazard to everyone, including the owner when the child falls, breaks a tooth, and the parents sue the establishment for liability because THEY were too engrossed in their appletinis to get off of their backsides and tend to their own offspring!
Strictly aside from the dismal fare of the Fireplace Inn: To have a child running past my table during an expensive meal was 100% inappropriate, inconvenient, and UNPLEASANT, and it should not have been tolerated or allowed.
THEN.........we made the mistake of ordering dessert. We ordered the "Caramel Apple Crunch" that was listed, but not priced on the dessert menu. I'm going to say that this disaster was $6.50 per portion. It was a soggy mess with unpeeled stewed apples and some kind of chewy substance that might have been crust, ice cream, about 3 inches of whipped cream, and drizzled with caramel sauce. It was bland, unappealing, and dumped into a heavy glass vessel that had apparently been warmed in a microwave....YES, savvy customers can tell when food has been microwaved, even in a convection oven.
NO, THANK YOU. Fireplace Inn needs a whole overhaul from the dank and outdated decor to menu to staff attitude. It was awful, I will never return, and I do not recommend this place for any reason. For the life of me, I cannot imagine how this place is as popular as it is - very ICKY
UPDATE: Now, it's midnight and both my son and I...
Read moreWe are working in the area and decided on having dinner because of the great reviews. I think the folks in Tunkhannock need to get out more if they think this is good food. To start, service was VERY SLOW despite it not being exceedingly busy. When we received our menus, my eyes about popped out of my head. The LARGEST, most diverse menu I have ever seen at any restaurant. This is NOT a good thing!! The quality of food is seriously compromised with such an extensive menu. More on that later... The wine (local red, sweet) was delicious. The salads (which came served in a clear plastic clam shell design--hello 1970's) came and were not cold as they are supposed to be served. Dressing was not on the side and the salads were oversaturated with dressing. We both ordered steak...my boyfriend ordered sirloin, medium. He had wanted Alaskan King crab legs but they were out. Now I am thankful for that (you'll see why at the end of this review). I ordered prime rib. Mine was decent. Not the best but edible. His was too done but he didnât say anything and ate what he could. We took the rest back to the hotel with us and gave some to our little dog. The twice-baked potatoes were dry and cold. I sent mine back and requested fries instead. They tasted like old fry grease and I couldn't eat those. We spent approximately $90 plus a tip. The next morning my bf called and told me he had been sick all morning with severe diarrhea. And I had told him our dog had been sick as well as I had just got done cleaning up 4 spots on the floor. The steak was bad :(. So that was our experience. We read the story online about the owner and how he started there as a teenager washing dishes...we do wish them well and much success but I would suggest cutting the menu selections in half so the quality of food isn't compromised. The menu options need a good update as well. Please take this review as constructive criticism. We found the building itself to be very quaint and the ambience was good. This review is not only customer-based, but my boyfriend is a previous owner of a booming restaurant along the Colorado River. That place wasn't closed for lack of success, it went to the ex in the divorce. Good luck and wishing you...
Read moreThis place is on the way out. Here are the highlights of our visit tonight.
Fifty minute wait for food after ordering.
The ENTIRE restaurant is extremely outdated and very dark. So dark in fact everyone uses iPhones flashlights to read the menus.
The decor is so shockingly outdated and very dark rough cut lumber and sticky chairs and tables all colored almost black to prevent anyone from seeing how dirty everything is. The yellow lights are atrocious.
The food when it arrived was all safe to eat. However mediocre at best for flavor, presentation. Menu has so many options there is no way to deliver quality. Cut half of the items and completely redesign how you do business.
Staff is overworked and I feel sorry for them to be honest. I could tell something was off with the service. But couldnât put my finger on it. Until I got to front to payâŚâŚ.
Owner. The lady that appears to be running the front end of the whole restaurant was not keeping up and was extremely rude to our family during checkout. But nothing compared to when a waitress came up and asked her a question about dishes and was waived off and told âstop waistline my timeâŚâŚ.â Then upon a very awkward checkout experience I said to her â good nightâ to which she didnât even respond?
Capitol. Absolutely zero capital investment has been put into this place in the 30 years. Everything about this place drives me insane from business management.
Recap: upon this visit As a local I have decided to only return upon new management. The current owner has been present from the 70âs and obviously has refused to change and is unwilling to put any money into the business and is sucking every dollar out.
A complete overhaul of this restaurant is due. I believe whole heartedly this place is perfect for a âsave this restaurant showâ
I could write a book on my experience with my family tonight. The only good thing that came from my visit tonight was our family talking about running a business with excellence and how this was the exact opposite.
Time for a...
