It dawned on me tonight, doing a home pick up run… that I’ve not done a proper review on The Chicken Coop in Urbandale for almost a year. How can this be?
Quick history, if you will allow me, our young children have graduated from DCG schools and are about to graduate college on Saturday. While they were being raised, their mama was a class A, in home chef, and chicken nuggets, fish sticks, or Mac and cheese were celebrities that never walked the red carpet in our kitchen.
When they graduated to Junior and High School, it was an uber busy schedule, and most nights, our Caribbean chef matriarch closed her kitchen so she could enjoy her kids in whatever capacity they would perform.
Enter The Chicken Coop that was our kitchen that was always open ‘late’ when kids needed to be fed. We could always get a table late and service that was always exceptional.
The staff has changed over the years but they probably have one of the lower turnover rates out there. BeeBee, who is a bartender and a master food slinger if you are ordering from the bar, is always a fresh face, even if you have had a long day…her smile always says “I got you”. Kim, who has a son in his next tranche of boot camp in the final weeks, is always a breath of fresh air, waiting on you or not and she’s been there for 12 years❤️..
Most have stopped reading by now, but Disney World is the happiest place in the world, just like the Chicken Coop is the happiest place in my mouth.
Tonight we had chicken wings, 20 dry sweet rub and 20 honey barbecue and we ordered those bitc@@@ extra crispy…crispy wings to the mouth of God or Rod🤣❤️.
Because we are food bi-curious and would never have order only one thing, we also had the 16 inch pizza with Pepperoni. Secret tip, we asked the chef kindly to make it ‘crispy’ because we had it in house there last week and it was, say it like an Italian Chicken Coop employee, ‘Perfecto’. I told BeeBee last week and tonight to go kiss and/or high-five that chef for crispy-fying our pizza back to the Stone Age invention of fire….she did❤️.
We also had the Coop Quesadilla with ground beef. Extra shout out back to BeeBee for packaging all of our crazy sauce/condiment requests in a separate bag and for pointing it out to me upon pick-up.
I never want the Chicken-Coop to go away, or the people who always service my family like their family.
Whilst I am the Chicken Coop’s hugest fan on any night and in any capacity, there is only one SLB (not SOB) that could validate this post with a palate smashing (“F’Yeah”).
I will be back, over and over again. — at The Chicken Coop Sports Bar & Grill...
Read moreI live 2 blocks from this place but rarely go there or order out. This evening confirms why. When I've been there in the past, the food was mediocre but a fun place for drinks. I ordered food to go today. I went to the bar to pick up my food and the bartender totally ignored me. He was at my end of the bar when I sat down but did not acknowledge me. He wandered down to the other end of the bar, did not serve anyone and then decided to review the menu. I tried to get his attention twice (I'm used to the invisible older woman syndrome). The second time, one of the waitresses snidely made a comment about the bartender having the right to look at the menu. I finally got one of the guys next to me to get his attention, which succeeded. It wasn't until he came to my end of the bar that I saw he was not wearing a mask. I don't care what COVID Kim says, I will never go back and will encourage my (large) family and friends to do the same. Oh yeah - about the food: the BLT salad was good. The steak was overcooked (we ordered rare hoping to get medium rare) and the fries were...
Read moreWe went to The Coop after a baseball game recently. Ordered potato skins for an app and they were awesome! Came with sour cream but the skins were so flavorful it wasn't needed. We ordered two flavors bone in (garlic parm and Jamaican Jerk) and two flavors boneless (Jack Daniels and honey BBQ). All were great. The first thing my husband said was they were the perfect temperature, and PERFECT amount of sauce. The dry rub was fantastic. One of my sons ordered the pepperoni pizza and it was easily the best bar pizza we've had. Great place to watch a game- the music was not too loud and enjoyable. Service was great. Price in line as similar restaurants, and food/ambiance far superior. 40 wings, 10" pizza, appetizer, 2 choc milks, one lg pop and a Moscow Mule was $97. We had enough leftovers for another meal, so 2 teenage boys, a construction worker husband and myself ate twice for less than $100. We can't do that at Applebees or Jethros, and food isn't nearly as good. I wish we had a...
