I really wanted to like this place. The look of the restaurant is awesome, there are little details like propeller blades on the ceiling fans, and tasteful plane mural and wall art, all following the airplane hanger theme. And the service was great - we were promptly greeted, and our server was attentive and helpful. Everyone we encountered was friendly. But the food was not good. The menu had detailed information on the history of the airport, offering great nostalgia. But the menu, as far as food, is pretty sparse. Not much offered past burgers and sandwiches. For a cafรฉ I would expect some soups, breakfast items, and coffee (which is on the menu but the server said the coffee maker had been "broken forever"). My partner ordered the Spitfire, their take on a patty melt burger, and I ordered the Mile High Club, their turkey club sandwich. It might have been good if it made it to our table hot, but that was not the case. I think they made the food immediately except for the burger. Fifteen minutes or so after we watched our server put our order in, the food came to the table barely warm; the fries on both plates were dead cold and my toast had gone soggy, yet the burger was hot. It was alright, but not good. The quality of ingredients were there. I think if it was made with better timing it would've been great. It was affordable but not satisfying. They need to match the food with the level of service and look of the place and they will have a winning restaurant. With a lack of good diners and cafes that serve standard American cuisine, I admit I will probably try it again after some...
ย ย ย Read moreMy sister and niece brought me here. They had enjoyed it several times but did tell me the last few times the waitress was rude and left their food in the window for a long time while she stood around in the kitchen and around a desk. We were seated unfortunately by the same waitress they had previously complained about but I was excited to try the food that they raved about. They had a great concept and the menu had something for everyone. We all decided on our dish. Each of us had something different and when the waitress came to our table to take our order we were told they were out of all three dishes. So we then pick different dishes, I picked chicken strips, my sister picked a beef grilled sandwich and my niece chicken fried chicken with sauteed green beans. When our food arrived the chicken strips had all been cut in half and they were visibly raw. Water like juices covered the pate and left the fry's soaking in it. My sister's grilled sandwich was completely soggy. Not a grilled piece. And green beans hard and cold on my nieces plate. The manager did not make us pay for our food and we left hungry and on to our appointment with no food for the day at 3pm. Not sure any of us will ever go back. Lacked friendly staff, and a cook to execute a fun...
ย ย ย Read moreThis is the best place I have ever been to eat in Texas. My first time coming we did fly in, so that might have been part of it, but my family stops here on the way to San Antonio for dinner/lunch every time we go. I have had just about every single one of their burgers and a couple of their sandwiches and I've never been disappointed. The waitrers/waitresses are always so kind and helpful. The inside of the restaurant is gorgeous- the dogfight mural by the checkout counter truly is amazing. The menus are so classy, and a mini history lesson on the airfield's use during WWII. (Full of wonderful pictures and explanations). While waiting for the food, there's a simple playground outside for kids as well as a little soccer pitch! You can't pass this place up- good food, a place to make some memories with your kids playing outside and being right on the flightline! This is a pretty active field too, you'll catch plenty of civilian aircraft passing through or practicing as part of the pilot school here- as well as the odd helicopter and roaming T-6 Texan II's from Laughlin AFB if you're in around lunch or dinner during the week ;).
