So I honestly cannot see why this place has high reviews but I’m gonna give my most honest review for this place. So I’m Cuban, born and raised in Miami (both my parents are Cuban so I got 100% Cuban blood) where there is a plethora of Cuban restaurant so I know what my peoples’ food is suppose to taste like. This restaurant does not serve the same kind of style. This is more of a Californian mix. So I’m gonna give a comparison of what I’m used to in all of the Cuban restaurant in Miami compared to here.
The food selections : there is a very limited menu and the reason they said is to keep the food fresh. Honestly to me any place that doesn’t serve “bistec empanisado” is not a real Cuban restaurant. To be fair, they said the owner knows how to make it but none of the other employees do. Besides this there is what I call “Cuban Highlight food” meaning they only have the most popular foods Cubans make. What I found strange is steak, rice, and bean is not on the menu but you are able to order it. This is a staple menu in any Cuban restaurant so I don’t know why they don’t have it.
The food: so I ordered two steak plates and a Cuban sandwiches with a side of croquetas. So the croquetas is displayed to come with 8 croquetas or so on thier menu but you actually only get 2. What in the world?!?! Now I understand you sometimes don’t get what the pictures shows but this is ridiculous. Why are you going to display a picture full of croquetas to only give me two. That’s ridiculous. Beside that point, the steak served here is not made like most Cuban restaurant. This was the Californian mix I was talking about. Not to mention the steak is thinner and a lot smaller than most restaurants I’m used to eating. In Miami you get a separate plate just for the steak! Here you can actually fit the whole thing on a plate and still have space for the rice and beans. Now I get it, California is expensive but if you are going to charge 47 dollars for two steak plates and Cuban sandwich, you better fill my plate. I could have made this at home 3 times over with much bigger steaks. All the ingredients are available in any safeway.
The lady: if you look you’ll find a lot of people mentioning a mean lady but to me she’s just neutral and emotionless, there are woman like that in Cuba. I can’t speak for other people’s experience but yeah she’s there and I believe that’s the wife of the owner if I’m not mistaken. She seems very confident that she’s providing a very Cuban style restaurant but I say it’s lacking a lot of quality I’m used to.
The price: the price is ridiculous but to be fair it is California. I mentioned above as to my cost for 3 people.
This is my piece of review and a very rare one at that. I don’t leave reviews unless something really bothers me and this is one of them. I could not have people believe this is the “Cuban experience” especially those who want a piece of home like me. I didn’t get that feeling here. You’ve been informed. I’m continuing the search longing for that little...
Read moreWhat the table ordered: Coffee (Cafe con Leche, Cafe Mocha Dark Chocolate) Tostones Croquettas Cuban Club Sandwich w Fries Medianoche w/ Black Beans
Food was delivered hot, fresh and of high quality. The coffee was bold and full bodied with good flavor and few hints of bitterness. Tostones were crispy and salted lightly, and not dry - very good. Croquettas were crispy and hot, balanced with good overall flavor and served with house mustard sauce - excellent. Cuban Club Sandwich was filled with sliced ham and turkey, bacon and lettuce on a soft cuban bread which in both flavor and texture resembled a Mexican telera/bolillo bread - very good. Medianoche came with roast pork, ham, pickles, house mustard sauce on a slightly sweet, pressed and buttered roll. This is a must-get item if you're interested in something different.
Staff were very friendly and worked quickly, overall we waited for all of our food for less than 10 minutes. The place is a bit drab but does not lack the quaintness or charm of a humble local spot. The prices were fair for the overall quality and flavor of the food ordered. Total price for all items was $59.40* *Also ordered but not listed or reviewed was a Guava and cheese turnover, I did not have the opportunity to try it, however it is made in-house...
Read moreWent here with some friends last weekend for lunch and I am not sure that it lived up to the hype and good reviews. It is a family owned cafe, and they take good care of the place - it looks very neat and clean, bright and colourful.
Service was decent too. The owner seemed a little awkward - she wasn't sure what we were saying when we asked for a recommendation and at first just said, "Everything is good, depends on you." Only when pressed did she volunteer the fact that she eats the chicken sandwich everyday, which we took to be her recommendation.
Among the 3 of us, we got a chicken sandwich at the owner's recommendation (was very solid), a beef stew dinner plate and I got the same thing as a sandwich. Sort of wish I had ordered the chicken sandwich instead, or if the dish came as bread alongside the stew rather than in sandwich form. We also got some frozen yoghurt to round everything off, and that was pretty decent. Neither better nor worse than other fro yo places I've been to. I may just be a bad judge though - I like all...
