Skal Vergas — Restaurant in Vergas

Skal is a great restaurant that is a must-visit whenever my family vacations in the area. The menu is varied with lots of unique twists on classics. An example is the maple-marshmallow sauce that comes with the sweet potato waffle fries - my kids couldn't get enough of it! (Who am I kidding - neither could I.) The portions are enormous, so much so that I always forget to leave room for dessert! The appetizer menu is filled with great pub fare, ranging from fried pickles, to Dixie rolls (their delicious take on a fried egg roll/cream cheese wonton hybrid), to Minnesota Nachos (seriously - just try them). The burger entrees are all huge, appropriately messy, and wonderfully flavorful. On our most recent visit I had the Chili Cheese Fry burger, which had the perfect amount of heat - enough to make me sweat a little, but not so much that it overpowered the flavor. To top everything off, the place has the most solid beer list in the area, and the service has always been consistently great. This is a high-quality restaurant in a small town setting. I will not be coming back and I am local, our first bad experience was we went in for a bloody Mary after icefishing and all it was was V8 and vodka. Second incident is up charges on the lavash for having Harvarty cheese, I thought lavash was always made with Havarti. Our group of eight was regularly coming in for wings Wednesday, we stopped going because of all the broken bones in the stump sticks that should have been thrown away. The last straw was when we went in for taco Tuesday at 7 PM and they were already out of taco shells, wasn’t that busy. I had the Mexican lavash and asked for taco sauce. When the waitress brought the bill she also brought the taco sauce that I had had asked for and charge me $.50 for a little tiny cup. Wife and I had been done eating for twenty minutes. iMessage them on Facebook because I thought they would want a review from the customers perspective. I got a snotty reply back from the owners daughter telling me that it’s people like me the restaurant industry hates. If this was my business that gal would not be working...

Skal is a great bar/restaurant. We come here once or twice a year while on vacation in the area, and it’s always been superb! Went last night(Wednesday) with a group of 8, and ordered right after another large group. Our food still came out pretty quickly and everything we ordered was delicious! The servers are super friendly, the food is way better than you’d expect to find in a small town bar, and it’s a very comfortable environment even with little kids. The craft cocktails were all really good as well. I’d make a recommendation on the food, but everything we got at the table was perfect, so just order whatever you feel like and it will be a really good version of that item.
