Prairie House Food & Spirits is a combo Bar and Restaurant on Prairie St. in Prairie Du Sac WI. There's a dedicated bar section with booths on one side and a regular restaurant on the other side with a mixture of booths and tables.
We went there around 1:00 on a Thursday and were seated immediately. Our server arrived quickly to take drink orders and gave us a few minutes to make our food selection. She patiently answered our questions about the food. My wife ordered the regular BLT with "Prairie Frites". Prairie Frites are regular french fries with parmesan cheese and garlic with a garlic aioli on the side. I ordered a Prairie Burger cooked medium with cheddar and waffle fries.
After a reasonable amount of time the food arrived. My wife raved about the BLT. She said it had the right ratio of lettuce to tomato to bacon. She said the bacon was high quality and not the flaccid paper thin pre-cooked bacon you'll see at other places. She really liked the fries as well, which is saying something because she's not always a big fan of french fries.
My burger was less remarkable. It was overcooked; on the well side of medium well. I couldn't really make out much pink in the middle of my patty. The burger lacked juiciness. It reminded me of the kind of burger you get in a place where they par-cook the burgers ahead of time and then toss them on the grill for a few minutes when ordered to heat them up. They look okay but lack flavor. The burger also didn't have any sauces on it. I would recommend at least providing a side of mayo for the customer to add if desired. The bun was a nicely toasted brioche style bun.
When we were done the waitress came over after a reasonable amount of time to get us boxes and give us the check.
For a BLT, a burger, and a drink (they didn't charge my wife for her soda water) the bill came out to around $30 which isn't bad these days.
Overall I recommend this place. The sandwiches are really good, as is the service. When you do, go for a sandwich instead...
Read moreThis restaurant offers a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals that are interesting, freshly prepared, and reasonably priced, from pizza to burgers, to full, fine dining options such as steaks, prime rib on Saturdays, and seafood. The Friday fish fry is good also. Some of my favorite meals are eggs Benedict, the French onion crock with croutons and melted cheese, and their Reuben sandwich. They also have beautiful desserts but I don't eat them, only admire them from afar!
I give 4 stars instead of five because the service can be hit or miss. When they are very busy it seems they either don't have enough help, or perhaps they don't have a good operational plan to handle it well. We have sometimes waited over an hour for our food. This would be fine for the full entree meals which include a salad bar visit. But it's not fine for a burger and Reuben order.
Regarding the salad bar: The options are common salad bar items and they do a good job keeping those options stocked and clean. I would like to see more specialty offerings that stand out as unique. Dorf Haus has chicken gizzards, Green Acres has bread, homemade croutons, and a cheese block, for example. I could not mention or recommemd any special items for Prairie House.
I do want to give a special shout out to the bartenders. We have found that the service is overall better and we just simply enjoy interacting with the staff working the bar. The have great specialty drinks, Such as their version of a Moscow mule. And also make great old fashioned, which is the standard measure of any Wisconsin establishment. If the Vintage is overrun and you're looking for another option, give this...
Read moreFish is awesome! Have brought my mom, cousin, and husband to Prairie House. Cousin still talks about the fish and how he is going to come down again so we can go get some more of that great fish. However, my husband has ordered the baked twice, on two different occasions and his order has been wrong. He won't eat the deep fried, doesn't like the deep fried coating. First time they got the order wrong they fixed it without making a comment, but this last time, when he sent it back there was a comment that there was no more fish for that evening. Why was this even mentioned and what did that have to do with making the customer happy? He double checked what was ordered and it was written down correctly, so there was a mix up after the order was taken. When my husband complained it should have been taken care of without comment. Now, we are considering going somewhere else. This place was recommended by my boss whom I think has worked there and I have been raving about this place, but after what just happened again and making my husband feel that he should just be happy to get an order of fish even though it wasn't correct, I'm reconsidering a recommendation for Prairie House. I'm disappointed because I think service plays a big part of having repeat customers. If something is wrong, fix it, without comment or complaints...
