So been a little anxious to try this restaurant. But most generally when I drive by it's closed. Caught it open today at 7:00 a.m.5/29/24 finally. Seems like a strange time for a cafe to open. 7:00 I should be at work by then. But we went in sat down and started to order. I overlooked the fact that the tabletop was filthy. The waitress arrived and asked us what we drink and gave us menus. She brought us our drinks and took our order. She brought us our food, I was working on some business and adding some figures and had my tablet in front of me. She showed up and said excuse me in a condescending manner I guess ordering me to move my stuff out of the way so she could set the plate down. She slammed the plate on the table and pushed it in front of me which seemed a little strange and forceful. And then walked away. Unfortunately we did not see her again. I did manage to slide my coffee cup all the way to the edge of the table and one lady did come by and put coffee in it. I wasn't spoke to again the rest of the time I was there by any of the waitresses. They seem to be a little rude and unattentive. No one ever asked if I needed anything else or maybe a napkin. And the most disturbing thing about the whole visit was the gravy for the biscuits. Didn't have any sausage in it. That's just Un-American to make biscuit gravy with no sausage in it. The food was marginal. Edible. But definitely food straight off of a frozen food truck. I think the chicken fried steak was definitely just ground up trash meat. It was terrible dry and really couldn't chew a mouthful of it without spitting the Gristle out. Very disappointed. And $30 for standard meals water and a coffee is a little excessive nowadays. Won't go there again. I got to say a bunch of cool memorabilia doesn't make a restaurant. The waitresses and the food make...

Read moreA beautiful morning for a drive. A quick spin on the Will Rogers Tpk. working our way between and around the heavy truck traffic and the annoying drivers that think the left-hand lane is for cruising. Then taking highway 69 N. at the Big Cabin Exit for the relaxing final miles. On the road side the cows graze in the pastures and redtail hawks are perched on the fences looking for breakfast.
The Hi-Way Café is a quintessential Mother Road diner, decorated with iconic symbols of America’s past. A must stop for the photo op and good food. Their menu is big, covering a little of everything. This ain’t no Mexican restaurant, though. If you are a tourist stick with diner food: breakfast, a burger, something fried, or simply a cup of coffee and a big slice of fresh pie.
For us a couple of eggs, crispy hash browns, crispy bacon, all cooked exactly as ordered. My wife added a big fluffy fresh biscuit with gravy and for me just the gravy. The gravy was instant; common. Very few diners make it from scratch. A few crumbles of country breakfast sausage for seasoning would have made it perfect. The coffee was good; our cups stayed full. Friendly service.
Be sure to check out the car with all the stickers on it. Also, the old Jukebox. It is still filled with 45’s; song titles that only your grandparents...
