Pros: the location was very beautiful and the manager was very accommodating and tried her best to fix a troubled situation and we thank her greatly.

Cons: waiter did not show any care to service us. We sat there for almost half hour before I flagged her down to come and get our order. She seem like we were troubling her. I started to notice that the area she was covering only had 2 couples that were black and she tried her best not to assist us. All the other tables were white families and couples. When she finally got our drink order and appetizers she left and basically never came back. Mind you we booked our reservation for us to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We were told they would make it very special for us. After she left another waiter came and brought out our champagne and filled our glasses. Our waiter didn't even serve us our drinks, we were still waiting for our appetizer and now we have been waiting for almost an hour. I finally requested the manager after seeing our waiter service 4 other whites families multiple times and not once did she come back to check on us. So my husband and I were ready just pay for our drinks and leave. We were ready to find another restaurant at almost 8:15pm. The manager came over and saw the look on our faces and asked us to give her another chance to make our evening better and she took over serving us. The waiter decided to come over after the manager got our appetizers out to us and decides she now wants to refill our champagne glasses and to try small talk after ignoring us for almost an hour. The manager brought our dinner out to us and was handling both us and the other black couple the waiter just didn't want to assist us. The waiter decided to show up again to bring us the check only. In all my years in the service industry I never experienced such blatant racist behavior from a server. Bad part is this was not even necessary. We travel to different restaurants all the time. The manager I will say thank you for your help and kindness for your service when your staff refused to be professional..

The manager offered to comp our dinner for our bad experience on our anniversary. We are very appreciative for your service. Some things that truly need to be addressed by management and the owners, making sure the staff are professional to all customers no matter what race we are, and food quality. The duck was very good and the spring rolls were very good, I enjoyed the scallop casino, my husband advise the she crab soup was okay but his halibut was cold and overcooked, the broccolini was cold and undercooked as well. I hope that you will look into that waiter's behavior and counsel her on what her job truly is. Don't assume that because we are black we won't tip or pay for the meal. To the owner of Steinhilber's you have a wonderful manager and you should really value her service and skills. But the young lady with the pink hair that was our waiter you really need to change professions or work somewhere else that don't care about their customers. Somewhere like a...

My wife and I first went to this restaurant on our first wedding anniversary. We had a great time that night and the food was delicious. For our 10th anniversary I thought I would take us back to the restaurant because it was a great experience. However, this experience was disappointing from a food standpoint. I probably should have gone with seafood, but I decided to try the beef Wellington. I hadn’t had beef Wellington in a long time and when I saw it on the menu, I pictured a beautiful piece of fillet wrapped in a light pastry crust with the mushrooms and everything else that comes in a beef Wellington. That’s not what I got. My wife who likes seafood a lot, decided to also go with the beef. Wellington, compounding the bad decision. What we got was the equivalent of a beef Wellington hot pocket. A tiny piece of meat wrapped up in a premade bread. I asked for a medium rare and my wife asked for medium. We ordered creamed, spinach, mashed potatoes and another vegetable for the sides. Before ordering the entrée, we had the fried shrimp and she crab soup as appetizers, which were both outstanding. Our waiter, Cameron was attentive, professional, and kind. The manager was also professional and stopped by a couple of times to ask us how we were doing. We also had a couple cocktails, which were also excellent. When the Wellington arrived, I expected it to be filled with a decent size piece of meat. It was tiny and for $55 extremely disappointing. Moreover, mine was overcooked and well done. I would expect a restaurant like this one to make its own beef Wellington using a large piece of tenderloin and made from scratch. Especially for the money the premade likely frozen hot pocket was not worth the time or the money. I sent mine back and waited another half an hour for my new order to arrive. By this time, of course my wife had finished her dinner, but they did give me some shrimp to hold me over until the new one was ready. Although the entrée was extremely disappointing, the sides were delicious and the service impeccable. It was a beautiful night and we still had a good time. When my bill came, I was charged for both shrimp when I was under the impression that one would be comped. The manager took the check and said he would take care of it. When he came back, he had taken off the shrimp and one of the Wellington‘s. That’s what a good restaurant does. I didn’t have to ask, he took the initiative and made it right. I will go back, but I’m not ordering the Wellington again. It is a beautiful restaurant and I’m sure that there are many other things on the menu that...

I had been wanting to come for years and last night I was taken her for my birthday. It did not live up to what I had read and heard. Outside is lovely but with intermittent storms we opted for inside. Valet gentlemen opened the entrance door for us and was very polite. My date made reservations and noted it was my birthday, which the hostess greeted me with. She again said happy birthday when leaving us at the table. Upstairs looked lovely but we sat downstairs which has an odd gasoline smell. The restaurant was not full when we got there nor when we left. We had to fold a receipt from his wallet to level out the table wobble. My birthday dinner had potential with seating areas upstairs looking bright and open, but I was being sat next to a huge electrical closet sign on one side and a plain wall with some bugs-guessing ants- smooshed on it. His chair straddled/sat inside the room partition tracks. There’s a big tv blocking a window with wires hanging out- nothing was playing on it though. The bathroom was nice but the first stall toilet needs to be tighter down. The servers work as a team and often check in when walking by- this is excellent training/ team building. We were given large seasonless croutons as bread. This was confusing as I saw actual bread baskets go to others. The blackberry mojito was recommended so we tried it, it was really good. I got fried shrimp as an appetizer- it was bland as if only flour was used, no seasoning was visible or tasted. The filet was eh- no real flavor. I originally requested a baked potato but the only toppings are butter and sour cream so I changed to the twice baked, it was okay. Two tables around us were ridiculously loud but it was never addressed. I watched another table get their birthday acknowledged with candle and greeting/song when they ordered dessert. Roughly 20 minutes after I finished we were asked about dessert. I ordered the lava cake which was good. But my birthday went unacknowledged. We got the check and since there is no signal in the basement sent the card with the server. He returned it but there was no receipt. Another twenty minutes we flag down another server and ask how to tip and sign. He had to go print out the receipt for us. We only saw our server again as we left through the outside patio. Overall drinks were great, service attentive, food eh, atmosphere dismal (at least in our area) . I could see getting drinks outside there but that’s really the extent that I would entertain...

We lived in the Hampton Roads area from 1981-2008, and dined at Steinhilber’s many times over the course of those years. We even celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary there with family and friends in 2004. We remember the founder, Robert Steinhilber, greeting us at the door when we would arrive and making sure that everything was good when we left. We have recently moved back to Virginia and were visiting our daughter in Virginia Beach, and were pleasantly surprised to find that the service and the food at Steinhilber’s continue to be excellent. We dined there on a recent Saturday evening. The weather was nice so we decided to eat in their outside dining area (new since we had last been there years ago). The tables are nicely spread out and the ambiance is wonderful with candles on the tables and lights strung around. We started our meal with drinks and appetizers. I ordered the mule of the day as my cocktail, but asked to have Sprite substituted for the ginger beer and my husband ordered the old fashioned. Both drinks arrived quickly and were very good. We opted to split three of the appetizers—the she-crab soup, the crispy octopus and the lamb lollipops. We remembered the she-crab soup from our visits long ago, and it did not disappoint. It was full of crab, and served with a dash of sherry—just like we remembered. We don’t often see octopus on menus in the US, so it was a nice surprise. The octopus was delicious—cooked to perfection! The lamb lollipops were also a unique offering. They were ground lamb, encrusted with pistachio and panko crumbs and fried. They were equally yummy! We chose to split one entrée, and chose the daily catch, which was halibut. It was flaky, tender, moist, and delicious—definitely fresh, and was served with a spinach and vegetable rice. We were too full for dessert, but we chose to get a piece of Jeanne’s chocolate delight to go and enjoyed it later that evening. Service was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, attentive and efficient, while allowing us time to enjoy our meal and each other’s company. Steinhilber’s continues to be an excellent choice for fine dining in Virginia Beach! If you are ever in the area, do not hesitate to book a table (definitely recommended as they are busy). You will not be disappointed. My only regret is that they do not have the seafood au gratin on the menu anymore.

Update: (Opinion) December 2022 - Having loved this restaurant ever since working there back in the late 90s, they have made a recent change in their menu. BEEF WELLINGTON - This is a pastry-wrapped tenderloin that replaced the original Petite Filet. Sadly, with gluten allergies, I cannot enjoy this filet as it comes 'packaged' with the pastry. I don't particularly care for the other cuts of beef offered. I never had to choose any other. This original filet was the reason I've come back to Steiny's year after year for dates and just wanting to get a well-cooked/served meal. I've moved away and still came back. The Filet that has been on the menu since the late 90s is no longer available and was the reason I returned. Sadly, this change in menu items will reduce my original 5 star rating to 3 stars as I will not be returning. (Prior to Dec 2022) Steinhilber's Restaurant, nestled within the Thalia neighborhood in Virginia Beach is a wonderful dining experience regardless of the time of year. I have been coming here since I used to work in the kitchen when I was in Princess Anne High School. I couldn't afford to actually eat here, then, and likely so as the food preparation and service is of utmost respect and diligence. And oh, how it's grown! It has always been a delight every time I've dined here since my days in college -- bringing a date or a good friend to be pampered by the wonderful wait staff who is there to meet your every need. A highly knowledgeable waitstaff is a plus especially with wine choices to pair with your order. The most enjoyable time to dine is most definitely a week day or near their closing time as this place is a buzz during peak hours...and rightly so. Steiny's has certainly made a name for itself over the years. Their food is artfully prepared and served to perfection, the floor staff is very attentive, always keeping your water or wine glass full to never have the unnecessary need to get their attention for refills. Every server I've had since I've visited the restaurant has been pleasant and knowledgeable and it is indeed, the finest dining I've experienced in Virginia Beach, by far! However, with the latest addition of the Beef Wellington, it is time to find a new restaurant that has a finely prepared beef tenderloin filet sans wheat-based pastry wrapping.
