CALL BE FOR YOU MAKE THE DRIVE! I’ve never rated a restaurant this low before and definitely thought I’d never be saying what I’m about to about this one. So, if you are a first timer and going because of a tv show, keep in mind that program aired many years ago. Our visit was June Friday June 4, and I will say my one and only positive note now, our waitress was Madie and she was fantastic! Knows the menu and drink list. I’m not a fan of IPA’s and she recommended a nice beer from Williamsburg. But this is where goes down hill fast. I previously lived in tidewater for 30 years but I had checked google maps to see how for capt’s was from the hotel. Maps and their website said they opened at 11am. Decided on a late lunch with my granddaughter a get there at 2. Lot is empty and doors are locked. No sign but hours say open at 11am. The lady in the gift shop says they open at 4 because they can’t find workers. I get that. We waited and played on the docks. My wife’s business has the same problem. But be open when you say you are. This wasn’t a just one time thing because regulars and a dog were at the bar by 3:45. Sent a Bloody Mary back lack of taste. Bartender tells my wife they add water to the mixer. Why do this? We decided to share the Admirals platter since we were close to meeting family later, and that was disappointing. Previously, I used to bring some of this home but now the portions are so small and includes what looked to be two rebreaded fish sticks. Definitely not worth the $37 I used to bring out of town family and friends here, summer and winter bypassing other seafood restaurants. My last visit this place was a must to do. I’m passing on grandsons...
Read moreThis was probably my first and last time dining here. My wife and I went out for a date day. She has been hearing about this place and how good it was, so we tried it. We waited 30 minutes for a table. When seated, the chairs were not comfortable and didn't match with other chairs in the restaurant. We sat there for quite a bit until a waiter noticed that no one was waiting on us. We ordered two drinks, Orange Crush and a Pain Killer for me. They were served in plastic cups at over $9.00 a drink. We ordered the corvina bites, which were great! Then the flies came. For my main course, I ordered the Scallops and Shrimp sauteed, with fries and the vegetable of the day, which was squash and zucchini. My wife ordered the Captain's Plater, with cole slaw and baked potato. The scallops were very good, the shrimp was good but not that many. The squash and zucchini were really good. The fries seemed like leftovers from the night before. The hush puppies were not good either, they seemed under cooked with the oil too hot. The difference with my wife's, was that she got a crab cake with hers, but it was really dry. My wife said the cole slaw tasted store bought. So the bill ended being 12 cents shy of $100. It was the most expensive meal I have paid for and not get five star all the way around food, service and atmosphere. I felt like I got so much exercise just from swatting away the flies. If you like throwing money away, this is the place to do it. I still cannot understand why there are 5 star reviews on this...
Read moreWent here this past weekend for my uncles birthday dinner. Aside from the service, which was great, nothing was exceptional. I started with the crab soup, which was did have a good amount of crab, but it was incredibly bland. I expected it to be a play on She crab soup, but it was more like canned cream of mushroom with crab meat. About half my bites of soup had fragments of shell in them. I also got steamed shrimp, which were okay, just a little over cooked and not quite enough seasoning. The biggest disappointment was the entree I ordered, the crab in butter. Every single bite had multiple shell pieces, and a lot of them weren’t that small. It’s crab and I get it comes in a shell, but it was just too much shell in everything I got to let it slide. I expected leg and claw portions and it looked like it was just canned lump crab meat dumped into a dish and broiled in the oven. The portion size was also very underwhelming. For sides, I had coleslaw, which was good if you don’t mind sweet coleslaw, and the vegetable of the day, which was green beans. They didn’t tasted like they were seasoned and were undercooked for my liking, but at least they were fresh? My family I was dining with had mixed reviews, for example, my grandpa got the mahi and loved it, but his oysters were over cooked and rubbery. He said the flavor was good, however. My grandmother got the calamari appetizer and I did try a piece of that, it was flavorful and tender. Our waitress was...
