So, having lived in the area, I have hit up most of the joints but had never quite made a stop off to Louie's. It was recommended to me recently and I decided to give it a try. Went with what I'd consider a fairly basic offering: Split Pea soup, half a pastrami on onion and fries.
In terms of ambiance and service, this is a 4 star diner. You will be treated well. The staff is knowledgeable (or will get the info you need), polite, friendly and attentive. The restaurant is clean, well tended, tables are bussed in a timely fashion even during the lunch rushes. Seating is a little packed, but what diner isn't?
In terms of cost, it's "in range" for this type of restaurant, but you're going to find the portions are a little on the heavy side, and the prices are about 10% over what you'd expect. If you want are used to what most diners call a 'bowl' of soup, ask for a cup and trust me on that. You will get a slightly small bowl serving. Ask for a bowl, and you'll get a soup portion that is nearly a meal. Portions match the price, but they were larger than expected.
In terms of caliber, I must apologize to the cooks but I am learning that I am a "Martins man" when it comes to the corned beef and pastrami in the area. The pastrami was a bit on the fatty side. The split pea soup could have used a solid helping of pepper to give it more kick right out of the gate. The fries... actually those were excellent. I don't come to a diner for the fries, but I appreciate good, freshly cut, potatoe-y fries as much as the next diner lover, and they have GOOD fries here. If you were to ask me to weigh in on which restaurant I prefer? The next time I want a Roast Beef and Pastrami, I'll be at Martins, where I know the meat is cooked the way I like it. However, there is a good reason that I sat down to see a loyal customer base filling the seating area in the lunch hour. The pastrami isn't bad. I'm just very ... picky about my corned beef in the end.
All in all? You will not go wrong to come here. The menu is simple and the fare is what you expect. Come for a corned beef, and you shall have it, and the service...
Read moreYou will get good food and nice service half the time you go. I have waitressed 30 years of my life, and every time someone orders breakfast, every waitress except here goes through the motions and asks the questions accordingly. Including letting one know about they "home made burnt corned beef hash" and that they do not have canned.. Fine, i can over look one. But ALL of the hashbrows ordered lightly cooked were burned. The most minimum amount of gravy on the Biscuits, not enough to even cover them. Then once I tipped the waitress who took my order, was asked for extra condiments (because were moving and everything is 3 hours north) and after I tipped her 10.00 for 4 breakfasts carry out, she copped the biggest attitude as if making sure we had ketchup was a hassle to her. Let me tell you this.... I spent 60.00 on 4 breakfasts and a fruit cup and even the fruit had some matted wet bread like texture on it as if it was saved off someone elses plate or pue and added to my fruit box. Now, I worked at LIZ'S HE CAFE FOR YEARS and never in a million would they make mistakes like this and if they made one, theyd fix it in a hurry. Also never would any of yhe wonderful staff treat their customers any nasty way after tip was received. Go to Liz's! 13 and Groesbeck! Tell them...

Now they are telling me, that they have 2 different prices for pancakes! Is this the most confusing restaurant in the word? My breakfast was $7.00, wanted some hot cake's on the side, nobody told me that I was going to pay $7.00 extra for three pancakes! Won't be back, $2.50 for coffee, in the smallest cup's I have ever seen besides cappuccino cups! How dare you gauge someone who bought a whole breakfast, for $.30 worth of pancakes! So my total, minus tip, was $17.49,.. Left $2.51 tip, so had a nice $20.00 breakfast. Your generosity is overwhelming with that postage stamp sized piece of ham btw...and your breakfast sausages, could use a few more lb's of chitterlings in them, as no meat was to be found in them. But I ate them. I only got upset, when I found out they charged me $7.for $0.30 worth of pancake batter! And just fyi, Ifor the same $7.spent on the pancakes, I could have ordered a whole other breakfast, and had pancakes, instead of...
