Route 19 Cafe — Restaurant in Waterloo

The food was good. I had the baked cod with mashed potatoes and a side salad. The side salad was what I expected. A blend of iceburge lettuce, shredded carrots, and crutons. The baked cod was slightly overcooked and had large amount of butter/oil on it instead of placed on the side but there was a good amount of seasoning on it. So I would still consider it a decent peice of fish. I was a little disappointed that the vegetable included with the meal was corn but I'm sure for a small town this is enjoyed by many. The meal also came with coleslaw but this was cream based and I am lactose intolerant so I did not eat this. The second side was mashed potatoes which unfortunately turned out to be instant mashed potatoes instead of homemade. It was also an option to have these come with beef gravy. For desert I had a peice of carrot cake which turned out to be made from scratch and some of the best carrot cake I've ever had. I've eaten at Route 19 Cafe once for breakfast and once for their Friday fish fry and both meals were exceptional. The first thing I noticed was the inexpensive pre-covid pricing. Nearly every meal for breakfast and lunch was under $10 and it was delicious down home cooking. The Friday fish fry menu, though a little confusing and difficult to understand, was surprisingly robust. Offering cod, perch, catfish and shrimp I tried the combo platter which had perch and cod and I had some of my wife's Jumbo shrimp. The perch filet was nearly as large as the cod filet and all of the seafood was fried perfectly. The cole slaw was very good and the fish fry included either pudding or ice cream. The food was amazing....I only had the salad but man it was full on flavors and the presentation was on point. The atmosphere was very clean, and nicely organized. The tables were cleaned twice before we ate, and the waitress was so nice and made sure she tooped us off with our coffee, which I couldn't get enough off. Not sure how this coffee is so good the but it is something I will come back for. My friend had the BLT which she said was by far the best yet. In my video the bread stick I ate had so much crunch yet softness inside and buttered to perfection. I will be going back and FYI ladies the bathrooms are so clean you would think your home. One more thing Tip your waitresses our bill was only $ 26.00 but I tipped her $10.00 which is nothing compared to the service...
