Love playing sand volleyball here, and the community can be pretty solid.
As others have mentioned, the scheduling can be hit or miss. Last season we didn't know when we played until the night before or the morning of the game, so we had to essentially block off the entire evening since the game could be anywhere from 6pm to 10pm. However, this season they released the full schedule at the beginning of the season which was awesome! I know they've been working on a system to improve that, maybe they finally got it worked out. It is worth trying MVS out if you are able to block out the evening for it. See edit below
As for refs and rules... it can also be a bit hit or miss, but for the most part is great. The majority of our refs in C league are fantastic, they know enough of the general rules to make calls when needed (which is very rare). There are definitely a couple refs that aren't great (don't know any rules, watch videos on their phones rather than paying attention to the game, etc), and we have expressed our concerns to management to no avail. The rules are straightforward and can be found on their website. Most are standard, but there are some setting/receiving rules in higher leagues that vary from professional competitions purely because they can't guarantee they have refs that know enough to be able to make correct calls (such as no spin allowed on sets because they assume any spin means double contact). Oh, and their nets consistently run about 3" higher than official men's height, so be aware of that! All of these slight variances (refs, rules, net height) are nothing that adequate players can't adjust to and still have a great time, though, so don't let those sway you from trying this place out!
Finally, if you're considering playing here and just was to dip your feet in the water, get a group together and show up at 4pm any weekday. They have $5 "open gym" from 4pm-6pm, so you can play and get a feel for the facility and courts. Then stick around and watch some of the games afterwards and enjoy some food and drinks!
*EDIT: New season started and its the day of my game and they haven't released the schedule yet. Given that teams have to sign up well in advance, MVS really should be able to make the schedule and have it ready to go at least a week ahead of time. Reducing my review from 4 stars down to 3 stars since they apparently haven't gotten this figured out. Come on, MVS, be courteous to your customers and get this handled! Almost all the negative reviews are about scheduling, clearly it...
Read moreBeen playing volleyball here for years, and they haven't seemed to figure out the issues. Scheduling is probably my biggest complaint. We don't know what time we play until the day before our game. That doesn't allow anyone to plan their day/week very easily. They said they'd do better once they figured out the new system but it's been months. Second complaint is the refs for the rec leagues. Many of them seem to be young and act like they don't want to be there. They hardly pay attention and mostly just look at their phones. They all have different sets of rules. Some don't call anything. Others call some things, but you never know what they're going to call or not call. There are no posted rules anywhere. I know it's a beer league, but come on, there have to be some basic rules and refs need to know what they are. Post a basic set of rules online or something, it's not hard. Doesn't even matter what the rules are, just make them consistent and teach the refs.
I wish I had better things to say, but they keep charging more and more for the volleyball leagues and they're not making any improvements. It's frustrating.
The food is mostly just standard frozen & fried bar food. The pizza is not bad. The craft beer selection is mediocre and servings are $7 for about 12-14oz. depending on which bartender pours your beer. The good news is, the bar staff has always been friendly to us.
It's a cool facility and the courts are in decent shape. Bathrooms aren't bad, and there's plenty of parking. Sometimes the music is way too loud and it's unedited, so the lyrics can get pretty explicit. I feel bad for parents who bring their young kids.
Overall, it's a good place to play sand volleyball, but the leagues are managed poorly and the...
Read moreLet me start by saying this place is such a great idea, and has the foundation to be great...but the place is being mismanaged, and the customer does not matter here. Leagues have had schedule issues for years, we have all put up with it due to promises from staff that they were trying to figure it out. However schedule delays remain terrible. We do not get our game time until the day before, with no apologies and no plan to improve. Multiple complaints have been filed by players on the Facebook group, and they are met with getting their posts deleted, and even had their posting abilities limited due to their very valid complaints.
Prices for leagues continue to increase despite these shortfalls. very frustrating as this place could be great, if they would only value their customers. Food is regular fried bar food, serves its purpose so no real complaints there. The bartenders are always kind and friendly, and the atmosphere is always a good time. Like others have said, the music can either be really loud and unedited, or it is quiet and hard to hear...depends...
