Came here for a dinner date yesterday. This was our second time dining at riverwinds, first time for dinner.
I'll start with the good - 1. Indoor and outdoor restaurant atmosphere is somewhat upscale and very nice, great views of philadelphia skyline. 2. Our server was very good and attentive 3. We were seated quickly.
Now the bad - 1. Food was awful - 1/10 stars. We were served bread and butter before our app, Butter was unsalted and over whipped - bread had too much yeast. I began to doubt the restaurant at this stage; but, remained optimistic thinking it's only bread who cares. Should've left then and there.
We were in the mood for seafood. We ordered mussels and chorizo in red sauce for our appetizer, my fiancee ordered crab cake dinner and I doubled down on the shell fish ordering the seafood fra Diablo. Big mistake.
Problems continued with the Mussles and chorizo app. The red sauce was tasteless, mussels were slimy and the "chorizo" was also very bland, seemed more like low quality italian sweet sausage at best.
I then worried I was not going to have a good experience with my dinner (seafood fra Diablo), at least with the mussels but remained optimistic hoping the fra Diablo sauce would compensate for the mussels and get me through my meal and given the price tag of our meals ($42 for fra Diablo and $35 for crab cakes), there was still a chance we would enjoy our main dish.
Main dish was served, presentation of my Fiancées crab cake meal was nice and my seafood fra Diablo looked okay. Looks were deceiving. I hate to bash like this, but the taste and quality of our main dishes were the biggest disappointment we've experienced at a restaurant in recent / maybe overall memory. My fiancées crab cakes were all filler, the crab meat that was in the cake was low quality (that sweet frozen fishy taste) and overcooked. Needless to say, my seafood fra Diablo was even worse. Fra Diablo sauce was thick like cheap tomato sauce and had barely any taste/spice, as I feared very similar to our appetizer. All of the shellfish was so rubbery that I could only stomach eating the linguine and left most of the shellfish.
My fiancées meal included ice cream desert. We opted out, asked for the check (which was a hard pill to swallow @ $130 given our experience) and left.
I honestly am baffled how this restaurant has an average rating of 4.4. Maybe folks are distracted by the ambiance and atmosphere to the point where they don't care how the food tastes. I just don't get it.
It really is a shame because the restaurant and atmosphere is very nice. Just wish the quality of the food matched to some level.
I can't speak to the drinks/bar as we did not indulge, so please keep that in mind. But when my meal cost $130 for a party of two (without drinks), I expect much better. Do not recommend and no plans...
Read moreWent here for my birthday dinner. The place is huge first of all from time you drive into the complex and parking lot. I joked that the outside reminded me of walking into Storybook Land because of white stucco facade. We had reservations which you can make online or call, but I don't think they're required. There are steps but a wheelchair ramp is accessible outside on the left walking into the building, though I don't recall any automatic door openers into lobby. There are different areas, aside from main floor, including a separate bar and an glass-enclosed room on left for semi private affairs. We ate in a long banquette booth which comfortably fit two large adults and two medium-sized adults. The table was raised off main floor so we had a spectacular view of whole restaurant. If you want a closer look at the river outside they have tables by window. Now if they had another upstairs area we didn't see but the ceilings were high so it's possible. From outside you can walk around the building to a waterfront promenade for pictures of the Delaware River between NJ & PA. Our server and bussers were very friendly explaining all specials and dishes. They do check id for alcohol. The place looked very clean but it wasn't super busy and we went for early supper on a humid overcast Sunday in mid- July. The menu is very long and overwhelming so we definitely took some time going over it. We ordered cocktails, an ample sized charcuterie board, French onion soup, a filet mignon with shrimp surf/turf, and two plates of the fish which was enough to feed FOUR people. It came with two sides, and the portions were enormous (see photos). All in all great value but do expect to spend at least average of $25-35+ per entree and I think they automatically deduct gratuity for larger parties . We passed on dessert, just had coffee. Very romantic! Driving there on gps looked like a twenty minute ride but you will have to drive through a winding road in a forest sanctuary and golf course development before you find the parking lot at the end so follow the signs. Will definitely go back for...
Read moreWe had our wedding last year at Riverwinds and it was the perfect location for a small sized wedding reception. The food was decent and everything mostly went well for our wedding. There were some things that didn’t go too well and I felt we’ll be talking about it for years. First of all, we had a wedding playlist that was connected to their sound system. It was playing fine in the beginning when we started the ceremony. However for whatever reason, we didn’t really hear our music being played clearly….and it seemed like there a malfunction with the sound system. We were both too preoccupied at the time to really complain about the music but that really took away the little entertainment we had for guests. And one last major issue was that we had a beautiful three-tier cake. The server had taken it back to get it cut so they can serve the cake at the end of our reception. Disappointedly, my husband and I weren’t served our own cake! I would think we get served cake first since we’re the married couple. We had to ask if there were any cake left and apparently they said the cake was all gone! I had some guests tell me they didn’t even get cake! We ordered this cake from a local bakery and it was made more than enough for our small party. And also we had guests that didn’t even show up…so there would’ve been plenty of cake leftover for us to even take home. Unfortunately we didn’t get to eat our own cake or feed each other cake for a cute memorable photo. Not to mention that we didn’t have the small top tier of our cake to take home so that we can save it for one year anniversary. We did reach out to our event coordinator about this issue hoping they’ll figure out what happened to our cake. But of course, we only got a short reply and haven’t heard back since. It’s a shame that it happened to us. Overall the wedding would’ve been perfect if weren’t for the missing cake. We would love to go back for dinner on our anniversary date but wouldn’t now since we’ll be reminded of the cake that we didn’t...
