What a wonderful casual meal! The restaurant is spacious and the tables large enough for two people and the extra plates for bread and wine glasses. The food was prepared extremely well, elegant and flavorful. The short rib roast was not over cooked (hard to do at most restaurants) and the carrot side was not canned, overcooked mush but instead fresh and cooked enough that they were firm but not raw. The Ahi Tuna was a large enough portion and perfectly cooked. The crust was delightful with pistachio and other spices. Fresh onion pasta was a surprise that made it more delicious plated with a yummy green tomato chow-chow.
Our server was so friendly and helpful with other recommendations for our stay. The town is sadly not reaping benefits from the bougie Greenbrier overpriced resort visitors. It was nice to see updated and modern but still good edible entrees.
For those who didn’t rate high, I imagine they are afraid of the atmosphere and prices for the entrees. It is NOT chain food quality so the prices won’t be chain prices. Our meal was comparable to meals we eat locally in NC in our small town. I will gladly pay this price for a meal that we enjoyed and was prepared perfectly.
I recommend that this is a better option than the overpriced Greenbrier meals. ($20 for a Reuben sandwich that was nothing special...
Read moreThe Varsity Club has the elements to be a very good restaurant. This was probably our fifth visit. The location is in the charming town of White Sulphur Springs, near the famous resort. The atmosphere is edgy and modern. There was live bluegrass in the lobby. When it opened a couple years ago, the lighting was harsh, but it's now toned down... except for where we sat. We were seated near the kitchen, where a really bright light pierced the serenity of an otherwise nice place. The food, however, really missed the mark. The food has been good, not great, but this time was really disappointing. I had she crab soup. Although it wasn't. It was really cream of crab soup without sherry (I don't enjoy sherry, so not a negative, IMO). Overall, I enjoyed the taste, however it was barely warm, not hot. Shrimp and grits was my entree. This used to be very good at the Varsity Club, but not anymore. The current version is served with deep fried grits, it's not visually appealing, nor enjoyable to eat. The sauce sort of helps, but there was very little. We also had a side of brussels sprouts which weren't very good, either. The dessert menu sounded good, but we didn't chance it. There are much better options in town,...
Read moreMy husband and I were in visiting family and decided to have dinner at the The Varisty Club. The resultant and The school house is very cool and has a nice atmosphere. The drink were good and the food was ok. To us it wasn’t worth the price, even more so for a small town. We both got the ribeye, my brother got a hamburger and my sister in law got the filet mignon. We shared the scallops to start and I had a Cesar salad. The scallops were amazing!!! The salad was ok. It was like they too a whole heart of romaine and chopped the bottom off and threw it on a plate and drizzled the dressing over it. Not nearly enough dressing. The steaks and burger are good and cooked well. The sides we got with our meals were average. The vegetables were a little undercooked. We order and extra side of the Mac and cheese were highly disappointed. It tasted like watered down Mac and cheese with barely a hint of cheese. Definitely not worth the $12. Our server was amazing and very attentive!
Over all it was a pretty cool place. Growing up here and seeing the transformation was pretty interesting. I doubt we will be back but if we are maybe we’ll try...
