STAN WALLACE Ballwin • 1d • Big disappointment at Big Chief Roadhouse

Went there today Sat about 12:30, we walked in the front door facing Manchester which is apparently the rear door, once inside just a sign to see hostess at the back

Big Chief is out in the garden. I imagine he used to be inside the restaurant but someone found him ā€œproblematicā€ and demanded he be ā€œrelocated.ā€ Or perhaps he genuinely prefers to be out there minding the garden and connecting with nature instead of stuck in the restaurant listening to the white man order his bison burgers and buffalo wings. My little cousin ordered the buff wings and loved them but was leaving a lot of meat on the bones. I took one wing and took him under my wing to teach him how to use every part of the animal, leave nothing behind. And they was mighty good, them wings, he weren’t wrong. Me, I ordered the Sunday special: Smoked Meatloaf, which came with house salad, mashed potes and green beans. Italian dressing with the salad was some peach colored nonsense. We really need to standardize Italian dressing in this country. And that doesn’t mean we couldn’t still have a wealth of variations, but generic Italian dressing at a restaurant needs to be brown, oily, and herby, not some store-bought milky thousand island malarkey. The meatloaf was great, bore a nice smokey flavor, and the sauce was NOT ketchup-based, which is a happy hallelujah for me. Potes and beans were good but nothing special, would benefit from stronger seasoning and/or some additional something for some flavor/flare. But for the most part all five in our party, including two picky children, were well satisfied. Big...

All right this was our first time coming to this restaurant. I was very excited. Everything was going fine until we looked at the menu. 20$ for a Country fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The waiter was nice and he told us the specials. One of the specials that I selected was the meatloaf special. When this meatloaf arrived, it looked old, and over cooked. But I'm still holding on to looks being deceiving. I took one bite and said this is old, my fiancƩ took a bite as well and said it wasn't good. We told the waiter this and his suggested the country fried steak, saying that it has the same sides as the meatloaf. So to make it worse, the waiter, that I taught was nice, has them brings me just a country fried steak with no new sides! My mashed potatoes had brown gravy on it the the country fried steak has white gravy. This is totally lazy and dissatisfying! Like, are you serious. I was so out done. I didn't want to cause any more issues so I just asked my fiancƩ to ask for the check. In addition to what I ordered, my fiancƩ had a salad and loaded fries, ohh and two sodas. In total this was 50$. So they took the meatloaf meal off and charged me the country fried steak meal, but I had the same old sides from the meatloaf! What type of BS is this! We will never be back here and I regret not checking the reviews first. Please save yourself the...

So I'm not from the city, but apparently this gem has been here for YEARS!! Talk about a diamond in the rough. There are so many wonderful things about this place. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the back entrance. We were seated on the outdoor patio which had heaters. They had booths and tables which is always nice to have that choice. Our waitress Emily was honestly one of the best waitresses I've ever had at a restaurant. She had great recommendations from the menu. We tried their nachos for an app and they were great, we forgot to take a picture, we both had the burger for our meal, he had fries, and I tried the mac and cheese. And for dessert we shared a piece of gooey butter cake cheesecake. Once we were finished with our amazing meal we were informed they have, wait for it..............a speakeasy!!! And talk about totally cool! I've never been in a speakeasy and I loved it. The drinks were a little high priced, but strong, so I guess worth the price? I'm not a big drinker. But it was like we stepped back into prohibition time. From the furniture, to the decor, to the bartender. Everything was perfect and fit together very well. So if you are near Wildwood MO do yourself a favor and go try Big Chief Roadside. I promise you will not be disappointed.

Lots of history about the restaurant, be sure to read about it on the back of the menu. I had a turkey sandwich with the seasoned fries. Amazing! The staff was polite and helpful. Was told that Big Chief grows their vegetables in their garden during the summer season. There is a room they call the trading post, not much in the way of trading goods though. You can bye T shirts and hats, they have a few games and a Quarter slot machine which was not working this day. They also have a desert cooler in the room. Have a drink at the full bar, play the piano or look at the many Indian / old west photos that are hanging on the walls. The outdoor area of the restaurant doesn’t look so inviting this time of year (winter) but I’m sure when the flowers are in full bloom it looks great. I will try to visit The Big Chief restaurant next time I’m in the area but if you’re in the neighborhood, stop in and enjoy a little history. Of course this is just one man’s opinion. We took a drive out to Wildwood to try Big Chief Roadhouse for lunch on a nice Sunday afternoon. Plenty of parking was available. We both commented on how the place looks like it's been there awhile, having no idea at that time about the history of the place. Now I know, this location has quite the history, dating back to 1929. We found our seats at the bar and was greeted by Joe. After getting our drinks, Joe explained the specials for the day, and one of them was their smoked meatloaf. Wow, if you love smoked bbq and meatloaf (like I do), this really hits the spot. Total comfort food with the mashed potatoes and green beans. I really enjoyed this meal. Cyndi ordered their chicken pot pie and said it was very good. We really enjoyed our time at Big Chief Roadhouse and certainly plan on other visit.
