The Tropics — Restaurant in Winthrop Harbor

My FIRST visit the staff was slow to greet me at the door. Staff sitting at a table inside the door eating. I ordered the "Philly Cheese Steak" Sandwich. The MENU STATES the sandwich will have " thinly sliced sirloin". The "meat" I got was "mystery" meat twisted like arthritic knuckles(NO WAY WAS THIS THINLY SLICED ANYTHING). This meat was chewy and fell out of the sandwich. The mushrooms, onions and peppers were almost non existent there were so few. I got THREE...... SLICES of mushrooms. This sandwich cost was $11.95 with fries. They DO NOT HAVE Sweet Potato Fries OR Soup. The MENU STATED they had Sweet Potato Fries. I was told by my server they had no Sweet Potato Fries. I love the view and atmosphere of this restaurant. The restaurant NEEDS TO HAVE ITEMS AVAILABLE AS STATED ON THEIR MENU. This restaurant needs a better attentive staff. I visited a SECOND TIME now. This time I ordered the Beer and Onion Brat Burger. I ordered my with lettuce and onion. The picture on their website shows four thin slices of red onion. This IS NOT WHAT YOU GET. I got one thin slice of a ''small'' white onion AND ONE PIECE OF LETTUCE REALLY SKIMPY. The Brat patty had NO FLAVOR. I choose Fresh Veg. with my sandwich. I was told by my server it was $1.00 extra when the bill cme it was $1.50. The veg. mix was mostly summer squash and zucchini YUCK. I did ask my server before I ordered the veg. and she said she had only served it once and could.t remember. There were VERY FEW carrot and cauliflower in it. Another person at our table ordered the Crab Grilled Cheese Sandwich. VERY LITTLE CRAB was in the sandwich for $14.95. The side with this sandwich was Cole Slaw which was in one of those SMALL tartar sauce SIZED plastic cups. THESE SANDWICHES ARE ....OVERPRICED......FOR WHAT YOU GET. Then the bill came THEY DO NOT....THEY DO NOT SPLIT CHECKS.........SO BECAUSE OF THE CONFUSION OF TRYING TO SPLIT THE CHECK THREE WAYS MY TWO COMPANIONS WILL NOT PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT AGAIN. We were told and she pointed this out to us in the menu but......this made for a VERY STRESSFUL AND AWKWARD DINING EXPERIENCE. WE WILL NOT BE BACK TO THIS...

It was our 1st time at the tropics and I would not recommend it to anyone. The service was absolutely terrible. It seemed to have been run by a bunch of jr high kids. We walked in for a table and we were not approached by one person that worked there. We asked a waitress to seat us and she told us that she will find a hostess to seat us. So we waited and no one came. We asked another young girl were we would find the hostess and she said "oh, that would be me." Great, so we asked to be seated. She looked at the waitress "ummmm....do we have any tables?" The waitress said they had "time". There were plenty of tables inside and outside open and there were people coming in after us to eat so nothing made sense as to why these girls seems so confused about seating us for dinner. We finally sat and order a taco salad. Just one and it took over 30mins to receive. Not once, did a waitress stop to see how we were. The tropics seemed to be very unorganized and poor customer service. I wouldn't visit again. I'll drive however long it takes to get to...
