I recently moved to the area, and heard nothing but amazing reviews for Nicky's. After seeing all of the traffic constantly turning into the restaurant I decided to try it out. No one greeted my party when we came in, which left us unclear as where to go to be seated Service was prompt at first, but after receiving our appetizers, we didn't see our waitress for about 30 min, and were just left to wonder where our food was During our abnormally long wait between appetizer and entree, I had noticed that the mirror wall decoration we were seated near was cracked and a bit neglected, which lead me to hope their kitchen was in better condition. Having worked at chipotle in the past, which has come under a lot of heat for e. Coli breakouts, I just took a quick gander at what their back of house looked like. The trash barrels were COVERED in some awful looking residue and almost everything close to the ground seemed coated in it. I stopped looking because I honestly didn't want to see any more. I'd have to say that Chipotle was cleaner. However, while I was looking in the direction of the kitchen, I caught the hostess eating! I pointed out the unprofessional girl to my boyfriend, only to realize that EVERYONE behind the counter working, was eating ice cream! Not just a bite either. I mean full cones. The food was plain. Both of the veggies they were serving were canned (corn and peas), as well as the cranberry sauce and gravy. I got fried haddock, which they left the skin on.. I felt like that's something you should warn someone about. It was horribly salty. I was parched, but my waitress was no where to be seen so I tried very hard to limit my water drinking. When she came to check on us finally, she started to walk away before I could even say I needed water. When she brought the water she forgot my lemon and a new straw. Our waitress offered customers seated after us dessert first, and served them their desserts before ours even though my party had been done with our entrees and just twiddling our thumbs for about 10 minutes. The waitress offered to heat up our desserts... Then I heard a microwave. I wish I had been warned about that too because it made all the pie crust pretty soggy and weird. After experiencing such a lack of caring and effort from our waitress, and witnessing the sheer disregard for food service etiquette (regardless of the mediocre food and filthy kitchen) I argued with my party about leaving a smaller tip. I just felt that the service we received was in no way deserving of 20%, even 15%, but I'm a tough critic, so I let my boyfriend tip as he pleased.. Roughly 20%. On our way out of the restaurant, no one thanked us for dining with them, or actually acknowledged our business at all.
There are much better restaurants...
Read moreI'll start off by saying the seafood was excellent. Service was average. I was with a party of 11 which we called to make a reservation but they said they don't take reservations but was able to accommodate us on a Thursday night at 5pm. 3 tables were pushed together with one entrance (meaning some had to slide over 5 seats to sit in the corner).
Once the 7 others arrived, it took the waitress 10 minutes to notice we were all here and to take drink orders. At that point we were ready to place the food order. The portions of our meals were adequate for the price, piled high but were on fairly small plates.
I ordered the chicken fingers with fries. It tasted like frozen chicken tenders. ONION RINGS WERE THE BEST! Giant sweet vidalia onion rings fresh and piping hot. A friend ordered clams/scallops plate and said the clams were sweet little bellies perfectly cooked. She frequently goes to Jasper's summer shack in Cambridge and Legal seafood in Boston and says this was hands down the best clams she's had in a long time! My mom ordered the baked haddock dinner. Fresh but bland. Fried haddock sandwich was a bigger piece of fish, hot and fresh. Chef dinner salad was basic and could have been more fresh. It came with A good amount of deli meat and cheese.
I took away one star because the service wasn't the greatest and it was so hot in the restaurant that we were sweating...
Read moreNicky's has been open for over 50 years. They are obviously doing something right. Nicky's is a family restaurant that draws a steady crowd. They're known for their fried seafood and ice cream but have many other offerings, including breakfast. This is typical to a lot of places we grew up with having an early closing time. My daughter and I were in the area and we were both craving seafood. Our waitress was very attentive. My daughter started with a Shirley Temple and I had a Raspberry Lime Rickey! Delicious, brings me back to my childhood. My daughter and I both got a bowl of Clam Chowder. The chowda was filled with clams and potatoes. We both thought it had a nice flavor but was a little bland. Salt completely fixed that. They might keep the sodium low for their customers. My daughter had the kids size Fish and Chips. She said it was delicious and the fries were cooked right. I had one of the specials, it was a Baked Seafood Trio. This was baked scallops, shrimp and haddock in their basic stuffing. The scallops were huge and cooked perfect. The haddock itself was cooked perfect, the stuffing in the fish had very uneven temperatures. Shrimp were cooked nice, but extremely small. The Mashed Potatoes and the Carrots were cooked right. Overall I did enjoy the dish. For the price, the juice was worth the squeeze. If you are in the area it is definitely worth...
