My partner and I were passing through Dong Hoi for the night and were looking for some place to eat. We decided on this place due to the high ratings, however, I am not sure how this place has such high ratings as my partner and I had a different experience- speaking mainly about the food. My partner and I came by for a late lunch, a little after they had opened. When we arrived, before entering, we noticed it was dark and the staff were casually sitting at one table. We thought it was closed, but when we asked, they quickly scattered off to their positions and started to get things ready. The young lady who greeted us was super friendly and welcoming, and the rest of the staff didn't really engage, but they were friendly as well. This is why we are giving the service a 5/5.
We ordered: stir fried morning glory with garlic, the shakes beef and steamed rice. The young lady told us because of the season, they didn't have morning glory, so she asked if it would be alright they made it with spinach. Turns out that it wasn't spinach and Shanghai bak choi- which we were perfectly OK with as we love bak choi. Although the vegetables were cooked right, there was nothing special about the dish. The steamed rice was cooked nicely, not mushy or wet and topped off with friend shallots which made it tasty. The biggest disappointment was the shaked beef- the flavour did not stand out, in fact it had an odd flavour to it. Veggies in the dish were cooked nicely. But the worst part is the beef- it was so chewy, it felt like I was chewing bubble gum. It was really hard to get through, near the end, we left a couple of pieces because it was not worth the energy to bite through it.
The ambiance of the place was alright. It was quite dusty and dirty along the windows, and since there's open spaces, lots of flies and other insects up in your...
Read moreA Must-Visit for Beer Connoisseurs: A True Jewel in Dong Hoi!
We stumbled upon this pub by chance and discovered what is, without a doubt, a true hidden gem in Dong Hoi. Normally, one would write about the food in a restaurant review. I won't do that, even though the food was genuinely excellent—the fish and meat dishes were incredibly fresh, perfectly prepared, and served with obvious care. My real reason for writing this is the craft beer, which is brewed right on-site. I've been to many craft pubs across Vietnam, but the quality here surpasses everything else we've tried by a wide margin. We had the pleasure of tasting the Amber, the Passion, and the Stout. All three were simply phenomenal. These aren't just hobby brews; they are professionally crafted, wonderfully nuanced, and each has a strong, unique character. You can sense the passion from the owner, who clearly understands his craft and can speak about the brewing process with infectious enthusiasm. Coming from Germany, having traveled extensively through the Czech Republic and all over Europe, we like to think we have a decent barometer for good beer. This pub doesn't just meet that standard—it excels. Our only regret is that we are just passing through, because we seem to have already found our perfect local spot (our Stammlokal) in this city. This is an unconditional 5-star recommendation for anyone who appreciates true craftsmanship and...
