Touristy, Yes – Delicious, Yes!

Dozens of the Mekong Delta boat tours end with lunch at the Mien Tay River Side Restaurant, so the restaurant is clearly geared to tourist groups. However, unlike most other tourist-group restaurants, the Mien Tay River Side Restaurant had great food and superb service. Don’t be put off by the kitschy huts and worn-looking lawn statues. The food will more than make up for the manufactured ambience; in fact, just ignore the concrete structures and look out over the Mekong Delta while you dine outdoors under a covered-roof patio.

Like nearly all the set-menu lunches and dinners we experienced, the first course is a rice-paper wrap that is filled with fresh vegetables. However, the delight here was a whole fried fish presented upright (with specially designed wooden holders), from which the server peeled off portions of the delicious fish and included it into the rice paper wraps. After we had finished with all the rice paper, we continued to use chopsticks to pick the fish clean!

The rolls were served with a “dragon egg,” which is sticky rice that is rolled into a ball and dropped into boiling oil, causing it to expand to the size of a cantaloupe. The server then cuts the ball into smaller slices with a pair of scissors.

Freshly steamed prawns-in-the-shell were served with noodles, pork, carrots, and herbs – a little messy to peel the shell, but worth the effort.

Dessert was, as usual, fresh fruit.

All in all, lunch was terrific – and a great surprise, given my past experiences with tour group-focused...

Delicious Tasty Food in a Tranquil Setting! A group of seven of us came here for lunch after enjoying the beauty, culture and small scale industries at My Tho villages. The restaurant is in a nice setting by the banks of the Mekong (Tien) River. The grounds are beautiful inviting visitors to wander around enjoying its beauty and well maintained ponds and grounds. There are benches too in the gardens and you feel like sitting there to enjoy the environment. The restaurant is very large and can probably seat more than 500 guests. Our food had been pre-ordered by the tourist company. The food served of course will depend on the order. We enjoyed our meal of fried fish with sautéed fish sauce, spring rolls, shrimps prepared in a variety of ways, tasty veggies, fried rice and a variety of other food. The food...
