Mendut Temple is not as impressive in stature as that of Prambaban. However, it features the largest ancient buddha and bodhisattvas on the island of Java, and it is a must-see. Mendut is a ninth-century Buddhist temple located in Mendut village, Mungkid sub-district, Magelang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The temple is located about three kilometers east of Borobudur. Mendut, Borobudur, and Pawon, all of which are Buddhist temples, are located in one straight line. There is a mutual religious relationship between the three temples, although the exact ritual process is unknown. The mural carvings on the outside of the temple feature many animal fables, one of the most popular being the story of the crocodile and the monkey. There is a small market on the outside of the temple. If visiting, this will be your chance to work on your bargaining skills. Generally, you can get around 50 percent off on what you purchased, but please don't drive for too hard a bargain as people do need to make a living. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office. It's generally much quieter than the other major temples, with only 1 or two tourists present on the few times I've visited.

A small Buddhist temple you should visit while you visit Borobudur. Located near the Borobudur temple, this place is way quieter and more serene. Pay IDR 5,000 to enter this temple and Pawon Temple (a smaller temple nearer to Borobudur). There is a Buddhist monastery close to the temple that you can enter for free when the gate is open (usually when it's not praying time). Mendut Temple is actually in not complete stage but the beauty still magnifying. Many people still come to pray here so please be respectful when they are praying. The park surrounding the temple is very green with many places to sit on especially near the temple debris and under the banyan tree. When we came here on a Saturday afternoon the place is not crowded at all with some small families and only one medium group so this is a good place to visit on your way back from Borobudur. Do not come around noon since it will be too hot and sunny. The parking is very limited so rely on the local parking man to help you but you need to pay as much as the ticket costs if you ride a car.

The temple was build around the 9th century and known to be the oldest of two other Buddhist temples, the Pawon and Borobudur. The 26.4 meter tall temple not only has become the centre of Buddhism practices and rituals. Vesak is also known as Buddha’s Day, commemorating the Birth of Prince Siddharta, the Enlightenments when the prince became the Buddha and the Passing of Gautama Buddha. These three important events in the life of Buddha. Thousands of people will congregate to repeat mantras and meditate to celebrate this holy day. The prayers will commence at Mendut temple, and will continue with a chanting parade marching towards Pawon and Borobudur temple.

This place has a lot to see and you can pray and enjoy the solemness of this place. Also can take good pictures. The only place you can't enter is where the Monks are staying place. They put a man in traditional clothes sitting in front of the door there. I thought it was real person 😂. Btw if you come around here at night,in front of the monastery there is this stall selling "Mie Gomak and Mie Goreng"you should try. It's cheap and delicious. The photos I post is the golden chariot from an event in Mendut Monastery. The other pics are in other phone. I'll post the pics later ( if I remember)

The Mendut Temple and Pawon Temple actually pre-date Borobudur, all three should be masterplanned and publicised together to form a larger cultural-ecological district. In fact after experimenting with Pawon Temple, Mendut Temple was almost like a prototype of Borobudur, and should be introduced as starting point of visit for all visitors to experience the journey towards the making of Borobudur. The entrance street could become a linear museum to provide better information, rather than the current street stalls, which could be relocated to form a museum store at the exit.

#literasyikgalih
