This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago.
You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set...
Read moreSkútustaðagígar is a fantastic and quick stop on the south side of Lake Mývatn. It's an easy walk from the parking lot, and the stunning views make it well worth the brief detour. From the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by vibrant green fields where Icelandic horses often graze. The craters themselves are a geological marvel, formed by steam explosions when molten lava flowed over the wetlands. It's an incredible example of volcanic activity and a beautiful spot to take some photos and appreciate the unique landscape. Highly recommended for a short,...
Read moreThis was a quick stop on the way to the Dimmuborgir Lava Field. Skútustaðagígar is a site of mini (baby) volcanoes that have died and created a interesting formation of craters on the lakes edge. The main issue we had and is something I would recommend you prepare yourself for, is the flies. The whole of the Myvatn area is swarming with flies and knits. Recommended you come with a mosquito net hat (see image) as it was very useful for us. If you are passing by it's worth a quick stop, but not without protection.
