We visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center while in Anchorage. This is an absolute must stop! The center is well laid out, tastefully presented and very informative. The presentation hall offers a variety of speakers every hour who proudly share their love for their culture. Traditional songs and dances were performed, with an opportunity for spectators to join in on the experience. The vast outside area allows for walking into the dwellings and lifestyle of the indigenous people of the area. At each stop, a guide is available to tell visitors of interesting tidbits. There are vendors that displays traditional and artisanal treasures if one is looking for souvenirs. There is also a formal gift shop. We spent about half a day there and felt more enriched for having visited. We loved the pride and importance of the place. Highly recommend it!

Peaceful setting. Delightful live demonstrations and short films every half hour. Beautiful replicas of different clan structures with staff inside to educate/explain scattered around an idyllic pond. Don't think of it as a museum, though there are some items with descriptions on display. Met Marge, an Elder Culture Bearer, who shared family photos and background as well as two stunning parkas she created. Many native artisans educating and selling at tables. Coffee/snack counter with reasonable prices for Alaska plus pleasant staff and outdoor seating with great view of the pond. Gift shop with nice array of merchandise, reasonable prices, and even some thoughtful travelers' sundries. For the best experience you need to look and engage, not just silently observe. I looked closely, engaged openly, and was richly rewarded.

As first time visitors to Alaska, we wanted to be sure to learn more about the people and history. We'll this center was the perfect stop to do both. They had native people giving demonstrations and leading tours that were very informative and educational. The tour took us through six full scale recreations of the various types of dwellings different tribes used to live the very difficult environment of Alaska. In each one, they had things that the people made as part of their culture. It was an hour and a half, but went by quickly because it was so interesting. The displays in the visitor center itself were also very well done and fascinating to see. We'll worth seeing! A must stop for anyone who has a desire to learn about the heritage of the Alaskan people!

AMAZING experience!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU VISIT!! The Native Heritage Center is a very spiritual place. Yaari Walker was a fantastic guide and curator of the 11 indigenous Alaskan Native Cultue groups. The exhibit structures and the many stories each structure told was very insightful. My family and I enjoyed every minute of our time at the center(dance, music, handmade art and exhibits) and walking the grounds. I highly recommend visiting the center but, more importantly, make the time to go and immerse yourself into the land and the exhibit structures on the property at the center to understand the culture and how the structures were used for survival against the elements.
