The fort James Beach is a very popular Antiguan Beach. The beach is located close to the Fort James and other locations in the area such as Miller's By the Sea and Splash Antigua.
A popular picnic beach especially at Labour Day and other public holidays. The long stretch of white sandy beach with several bars and Restaurants. A major beach complete with restroom, changing and shower facilities making it a desired picnic location. Swimming and beach activities abound on this beach since the water is relatively calm, please beware of the deceptively strong ocean current.
Palm trees and Seaside Grape trees with some grassy areas are present at the side of the road directly next to the beach. As I often say "To get more coastal than this is to be driving in the water", This is another one of Antigua's Drive in Beaches (Right next to the roadside), a great option for casual sea bathers and other users of the beach and rather extensive surrounding areas.
The surrounding scenery (The seascape if you will) is rather scenic and delightful, the sunsets are that much more spectacular since the horizon is in full view (look out for that flash of green). In the Tourist Season Cruise ships can be seen entering and leaving the neighbouring St. John's Cruise Port and day passengers among the beach goers.
The Fort James Beach can best be described as a park and a beach area with several business and amenities available. This beach can take a whole day and even evening to enjoy so please budget the time in your rather ambitious schedule. A great place to visit or to spend a day picnicking and it is highly recommended. As they say "Watch out for the...
Read moreWe walked to Fort James Beach from the cruise terminal at St John's, a walk of about 40 minutes. We arrived really early, just before 9, on a beautiful sunny day. The soft sand and the beautiful clear blue water was so inviting. The beach was really clean, no sign of litter, and there are bins by the shop and bars.
There are several small bars dotted along the beach plus a small shop or two selling fridge magnets, towels, tops and t-shirts. It is also possible to ride along the beach, weight permitting,on one of the horses that are available for guided rides from one of the small shops. The horses are well looked after, look well fed, and are walked into the sea to cool down after a ride.
We had cold drinks from one of the bars, a relaxed place for food or drinks. Everyone was so friendly. We thought $10 for a sunbed was a bit pricey, so we opted for laying our towels on the sand. The sea was beautifully clear, crisp blue and really warm. Lovely.
There's a helicopter port nearby so occasionally a helicopter or two fly in and iyt, but they certainly didn't detract from our visit. We stayed until lunchtime before heading back via taxi ($15, of which there are plenty dropping people off throughout the morning, so we didn't book one, we just grabbed an available one) to the cruise terminal and port, about five minutes.

Visiting Fort James in Antigua was like stepping back into the island's colonial history. Built in the 18th century to defend against invaders, its well-preserved cannons and ruins stand as silent sentinels over the picturesque St. John's Harbour. The panoramic views from the fort are breathtaking, offering a perfect blend of Antigua's natural beauty and historical intrigue. As a tourist, the experience was both educational and visually stunning. Wandering through the grounds, I felt a deep connection to the past, imagining the lives of those who once guarded this strategic point. The site’s serene atmosphere, combined with its historical significance, made my visit to Fort James an unforgettable part of my...
