The square is surrounded by beautifully preserved colonial buildings and cobblestone streets, providing a picturesque backdrop for the numerous activities that take place there. Plaza Dorrego One of the areaswe visit eith @jyofbuenosaires

Plaza Dorrego, located in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, has a rich history dating back to 1745 when it was reserved for public use by the Cabildo. Initially a marketplace and stopover for carriages, it was known as "Plaza de la Residencia" due to its proximity to the Jesuit residence. After the Jesuits were expelled in 1768, it became "Plaza del Alto de San Pedro."

Patricio French, father of the creator of the Argentine cockade, had a business nearby, and the square was a focal point during the May Revolution of 1810. It hosted the reading of the Independence Proclamation in 1816. Renamed "Plaza de Comercio" in 1822, it finally became Plaza Dorrego in 1900, honoring Colonel Manuel Dorrego.

It has a vibrant tango heritage, particularly during sunday night (8pm to 11 pm) The square remains lively, with outdoor cafés and music, making it a cherished cultural spot in...

This is a lovely square in the heart of San Telmo. A great place for people and local family watching. I particularly enjoy the Sunday street market with local crafts and offerings from the many antique shops in the area. The Tango is frequently performed in the square, to the delight of locals and tourist alike. Unfortunately, they were not present during my recent trip in February 2021. Indeed, I saw no street Tango (a key part of the charm of Buenos Aries for me) on this trip. Perhaps it is restricted by the government due to the pandemic. This is the only reason this is a four instead of five star review.

Great little place. There are a few Tango dancers during the week that pass the hat round for tips after their show. Sunday evening had a big group of people dancing, it was a mixture of professionals and beginners. I would recommend the Sunday evening for a visit, you are watching people who are there to dance for the fun of it rather than for cash. Quality of food an service is very variable between the numerous bars and cafes. Tables aren't very clearly marked as belonging to which bar so it is difficult to recommend one by name.
