Areni Wine Factory — Attraction in Areni

A fun little-ish local winery that offers tours and wine degustations. Our driver-guide suggested to visit it on the way back from Noravanq. We tried 4 glasses of wine each (wine can be replaced with a shot of local cognac). It’s a fun and tasty experience: to sip different types of wine before finally giving in into temptation to buy a bottle. The owners were very pleasant and also offered us some coffee, that we enjoyed atop of a terrace with a wonderful mountain view after a short tour. The tour guide gave us info about the ways of their wine and drink’s production in general, showed us the cellar, bottles and barrels. Founded in 1994, Areni Wine Factory is among the oldest and most well-established wine facilities in the area. The winery has welcomed some 30,000 visitors every year since 2012. A tour of the factory includes a walk through the cellar where wine is aged in massive oak casks, followed by a tasting of the winery’s selection of traditional and fruit wines. In an upstairs dining area, guests can order coffee or tea and watch a short video about the Armenian winemaking tradition and the history of the company. Excellent experience! The staff speaks English very well, which made the whole visit smooth and enjoyable. The guided tour of the wine cellar was completely free and included tastings of 3 different wines and even a sample of their house-made vodka. The cellar itself is atmospheric and gives a great insight into the local winemaking tradition. For those wanting more, a full tasting of 10 wines is available for just 1000 AMD – an amazing value for the quality and quantity offered.
