Finally, I got to visit Athugala or Ethagala, where the imposing 80 foot tall statue of the seated Buddha dominates the skyline of the city of Kurunegala. The rock face, which resembles a crouching elephant (and hence its name), reaches a 1000+ feet over the town. The best way to get there is by a vehicle to save yourself from an energy sapping climb. Once you have venerated the Buddha and taken in the beauty of the absolutely stunning scenery around and the lake below, you can descend from the opposite direction through a flight of steps cut into the face of the rock. The descent is not really a cakewalk, as the steps are really steep, but thankfully, there are rails to support you.
