Last January I was visiting my best friend and her husband in Adelaide. We decided to take a drive to McLaren Vale and go wine tasting with a very strong, "WE are NOT buying any wine, just tasting!" slogan. We did OK for the first 2 and then we came across Samuel's Gorge. From the moment we stepped into the premises we were grinning. It wasn't shiny, perfect and clinical; it was dusty and full of vintage machines and ornaments and we loved it! The setting was nothing short of being reminiscent of tuscany in Italy and coffee was being offered for the designated drivers.
As we walked in we heard a very loud voice talking about the wine to a small group of people and slowly this voice and the person from whom it was emanating from moved towards us and filled our glasses with the first wine on the menu, which btw is small, but very precise. As he handed us the wine glass which was filled way way past the "tasting" level, he explained what it was, the flavours and the process that it went through. Then we had a smell and a sip...at this point we just looked at each other and we knew that we would not be leaving empty handed. The wine was incredible and as Justin, the owner, talked more about the wine and the industry we were getting more hooked. We felt the true passion this man feels for wine which is really rare to see. He's not there for the money or the glory, although I am sure that will come, but for his man it is about the wine.
If you like quality over quantity, if you like intimate over massive and shiny and if you love good quality wine and want to see this industry grow here in Australia, visit Samuels Gorge, try the wine and...
Read moreI had a wonderful time visiting this charming vineyard — an absolute hidden gem nestled among rolling hills and nature. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by friendly and attentive staff who made us feel completely at home. Their warmth and passion for the place truly enhanced the experience.
The atmosphere is rustic and cozy, with old-world charm. Inside, the vintage equipment and warm interiors create a unique, heritage feel — perfect for soaking in the moment with a glass of wine in hand. Outside, the view is absolutely stunning. We sat under a canopy of red leaves overlooking sun-drenched hills — the kind of peaceful view that makes you want to sit and chat for hours.
This is the ideal spot to unwind with friends or family. Whether you're catching up over trivia, sharing stories, or just enjoying the silence and the scenery, this place encourages you to slow down and be present. The setting, both inside and out, is Instagram-worthy, and the calm vibe is a welcome escape from city life.
It’s not just a wine-tasting stop — it’s a destination where you can really relax and enjoy quality time. Great wine, great company, and a beautiful view — what more could you ask for?
Definitely a place I’ll return to, and one I highly recommend to anyone looking for a cozy, scenic, and welcoming...
Read moreUnlike other "famous" wineries of the region Samuels Gorge is un pretentious BUT that is what makes it stand out as probably the best representation of McLaren Vale, its people, wine and history.
Sitting within a fantastic location - the stunning natural Onkaparinga gorge on one side and a full view of the McLaren Vale region on the drive in. The rustic cottage holds artifacts, comfortable seating and historic stories making it a place to stay a while. The gardens are beautiful with seating on the verandah, green grass areas and the stunning view.
We had planned a day touring the area with overseas cruise visitors and selected Samuels Gorge as 1 of 2 tastings for the day. We spent a leisurely 1.5hrs within a rustic tasting room being pleasantly attended to by the two cellar door staff. As well as doing there job they were happy to chat, answer questions - they really added to the whole experience. Our visitors so happy to have met them and the stories they had. The wine tasting was enjoyed by all and being able to purchase bottles with the tasting cost deducted from the cost was a bonus.
We have been 3 times since 2013 and will certainly try to make it in more often...
