I must say that pop's (Wilf Taylor's) vision for the northern paddocks was in the order of visionary. I get a great kick out of strolling around the reserve on a pleasant, sunny day on a weekend, watching so many families (often involving three generations) having a wonderful time. The scaled down train rides and the remote control race cars on opposing ends of the site are a special treat, and the walk in-between, at my age, is is simply a pleasurable way to get some beneficial exercise. And it's such a buzz on a warm, sunny day; all that positive energy in the air, with mum's and dad's, grandma's and grandpa's attempting to relax while the kids scamper all over the landscape doing what kids do and disappearing from sight, just as they were told not to do. I know it always brings a smile to my face. I see those children investigating and enjoying the exact same spots I used to enjoy, some fifty plus years ago. 'Good on ya, pop, wherever you are. It's quite a legacy, and it warms the cockles of this man's heart. I wonder if you had any idea how nice it would turn out to be?' And between the bustling weekend family gatherings? The tranquility remains. The land is imbued with some kind of restorative spiritual energy which always lured me out there as a child, to just sit and ponder life. I see folk out there doing just that today. Maybe doing so with Rex or Fido? It really is, for me at least, a spiritual place, and one has to consider if native families or tribes wondering down from the foothills, following the watercourse to the ocean at Christie's Beach North; if they too didn't pause there to enjoy Nature's ameliorate energies that, so noticeably, are woven into the fabric of the landscape. I remember it as wheat fields and grazing for Marino sheep and the working horses on Thrush Grove Farm after harvest. The old homestead remains, across the way. Looking a little forlorn and in want for attention. It was to be a bed and breakfast, and restaurant, when I spoke to the new occupant some five or six years ago. We'll just have to wait and...
