Grand Stairway — Attraction in Blue Mountains National Park

Dizzying! Chances are if you hike to the base of Wentworth Falls, you'll descend the Grand Stairway. Looking out over the Jamison Valley from Fletchers Lookout, it seems impossible that there is a route in the sheer rock faces leading to the valley floor. Yet a team nicknamed "the Irish Brigade" in the years 1906-07 using shovels, pickaxes and dynamite managed to construct a breathtaking and dizzying stairway which is reported to be 'the tallest outdoor stairway in Australia'. The Grand Stairway is the starting point of one of the most breathtaking hikes in the Blue Mountains. It marks the beginning of a steep descent toward Wentworth Falls and offers a spectacular side view of the waterfall — a perfect photo spot before heading further down.

The stairs are well-maintained but quite steep, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge on the way back up. Still, the views, the sound of the falls, and the surrounding cliffs make every step worthwhile. A must-do for anyone visiting...

If you walk to Wentworth Falls, be sure to make the small detour to the right and head out onto the Grand Stairway for a great experience. Even if you don’t take the stairs all the way down to the valley floor, the view from the cliff ledge is beautiful. If you do decide to descend to the bottom of the falls, note that the stairs are extremely steep & there are approx 500 of them, so is tough ascending, however the scenery is amazing!
