My favourite activity in Broken Hill. The Pro Hart Art Gallery is just out of town, plenty of street parking and only $5 for adults and $3 for kids / seniors to get in. Was wonderful seeing Pro Hart's old house and art studio (which is left in original condition). It is interesting to see his earlier works which were quite conservative and quintessentially captured Australian scenes like at the beach and the cricket. His later abstract works are what most people are familiar with - including the iconic carpet ads from the late 80s / early 90s.

There are multiple levels of artworks here and you could spend a solid hour here or longer if you watch the documentary on loop. When the entry is so cheap I always like to support the gift shop so picked up some cool tea towels for home.

The staff are really knowledgeable and friendly. There is an outdoor sculpture garden across the road. Several of Pro Hart's sculptures can be seen downtown as well as large painted artworks at Broken Hill Regional Airport inside the...

Couldn't take any photos indoors but Pro Hart's Rolls Royces, Bentley and sculptures across the road were fair game. To this amateur's eye, Pro's skills were colour coordination, varying degrees of abstract work on various media including cars and carpet, flowers, country cultural scenes, mining, people and spirituality without pompous piety. Items including the pressure paint gun and paints used in his abstract work are on display, as are his mining paraphernalia including a photo of Pro driving an underground vehicle, his hard hat and his beautifully painted lunch box. Some of his art such as paintings, etchings and a great variety of his prints are for sale. There is also a mini cinema with cushy seating to view a series of documentaries and interviews with Pro. Overall, it is an inspiring experience of Pro's passion and God-given talent, royally...

Review: Pro Hart – A True Aussie Treasure

What an absolutely talented man Pro Hart was. His work is nothing short of extraordinary — rich in colour, energy, and storytelling. Each painting captures the essence of Australian life with a unique mix of humour, emotion, and striking detail. From his iconic outback scenes to his experimental pieces using unconventional materials, Pro Hart’s creativity knew no bounds.

He didn’t just paint; he brought stories to life on canvas, making art that’s both relatable and deeply moving. Visiting his gallery or viewing his work is a reminder of how one man’s passion and perspective can capture the spirit of a nation.

A true Aussie legend and a rare talent whose legacy...

I was a big fan of Pro Hart as a kid. I remember the Berger carpet ad and thought who is this guy making art on the carpet with food. So I was delighted when I mentioned the ad to staff at the front desk and they offered to put it on for everyone in the gallery to watch. He commented afterwards he has never heard applause like that for screening the ad. I was tickled pink. It is fantastic they have kept his studio as it was, including the canon he used for his paint splatters. I was equally delighted to purchase two towels of the artwork created on the Berger carpet ad…a reminder of the creativity behind the artist. Fabulous gallery. Lovely staff. Worth the visit.
