A Beacon of Beauty and History

The Cape Otway Light station is a must-visit attraction for anyone travelling to Victoria, Australia. Located on the Great Ocean Road, this historic lighthouse offers breathtaking views, fascinating history, and an unforgettable experience.

The Light station is the oldest surviving and still functioning lighthouse on mainland Australia. Built in 1848, it has guided mariners safely along the rugged coastline for over 170 years. As you climb the 78 stairs to the top of the 18-meter-tall tower, you are rewarded with panoramic views of the Bass Strait and the surrounding landscape. On a clear day, you can even spot the distant coastline of Tasmania.

But the light station is more than just a pretty view. It is steeped in history and offers a glimpse into the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families who lived and worked here. The museum on site showcases exhibits on the maritime history of the area, the construction of the lighthouse, and the daily life of the keepers. You can explore the original keeper's cottage, which has been beautifully restored to its 19th-century state.

One of the highlights is the opportunity to see the lighthouse in action. As the sun sets, the light is lit, casting a powerful beam of light out to sea. It's a truly mesmerizing sight and a great photo opportunity.

The light station is also a brilliant spot for nature lovers. The surrounding area is home to a variety of wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos, and a variety of bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for these amazing creatures as you explore the grounds.

In addition to the lighthouse and museum, the Cape Otway Light station also offers a range of other activities and amenities. You can take a guided tour, go hiking in the nearby Otway National Park, or enjoy a meal at the on-site cafe. There are also accommodation options available for those who want to stay a little longer and truly immerse themselves in the area.

This is a must-visit attraction for anyone travelling to Victoria. Its stunning views, rich history, and unique experience make it a standout destination. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or just looking for a unique experience, the Cape Otway Light station is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Admission fees apply, with discounts available for concession card holders and children. Guided tours and accommodation options available at an additional cost.

Cape Otway light station - my wife and I stayed here overnight during a three day drive along the Great Ocean Road as part of a weeklong stay in Melbourne. It was cold and cloudy during our stay which we felt added even more character to the historic, rugged southern coast locale. The radiators in the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen kept us cozy the whole time. We stayed in the Lightstation Studio which is next door to the cafe and is the smallest of the units but with an amazing view directly out to the lighthouse and the sea beyond. It was the perfect size for two people with a large walk in shower, well equipped kitchen, and comfortable bed. My only complaint is the miscommunication regarding their reference to breakfast in the booking confirmation email: “Tariff includes breakfast in our Lightkeeper's Cafe & entry into the Historic Lighthouse Precinct is included, a saving of $19.50 per adult & $7.50 for children.” However when we went to the cafe first thing in the morning when they opened we were told that they don’t serve breakfast and that the tray in our room was meant as a breakfast tray. I didn’t realize that. The tray was in our room upon arrival and included some old looking fruit, a jar of muesli and some crusty day old bread in a brown paper bag and some single serving containers of butter and jam. The food and espresso that we ended up purchasing in the cafe was very good but just know that café breakfast is not included with the room. We were told by the cafe workers that the verbiage in our email describing the included breakfast must have been old. ? Overall the grounds were interesting to explore and to learn how the light station came to be. During an early morning walk around the grounds before other guests or tourists started venturing out for the day, I happened upon two kangaroos and later on our drive out we saw a few koalas, both sightings were definitely firsts for us and unforgettable. We didn’t have a chance to actually go up into the lighthouse as we arrived too late the first night and had to check out and leave before it was open the next day. We would stay here again though and hopefully...

"A Must-Visit Scenic Gem on the Great Ocean Road" If you're exploring the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Cape Otway Lightstation is an absolute must-visit. This historic site is not just a lighthouse, but a gateway to rich history, breathtaking ocean views, and natural beauty. What to Expect at Cape Otway Lightstation:- ✅ Stunning Coastal Views & Lighthouse: The panoramic views of the ocean from the lighthouse are simply breathtaking. You’ll need to pay a small entry fee, but it’s well worth it to explore the oldest surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia, dating back to 1848. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse tower rewards you with spectacular scenery of the rugged coastline. ✅ History & Cultural Significance: Step into the Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters, where you’ll discover stories of the past, how keepers lived, and the challenges of operating a lighthouse in the early days. Learn about shipwreck history—this stretch of coastline is famously known as “Shipwreck Coast” due to its treacherous waters. Explore ancient dinosaur remains discovered in the area, giving a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric history. ✅ More Than Just a Lighthouse: The site features well-preserved ancient maritime equipment, adding to its historical charm. There’s a self-serve café where you can grab a drink while soaking in the views. Well-maintained sanitation facilities ensure a comfortable visit. ✅ Walking Trails & Lookout Points: Plenty of scenic walking trails lead to beautiful lookout points, making it a great spot for nature lovers. A mini trek takes you through lush greenery and coastal cliffs, perfect for those who enjoy a little adventure. ✅My Experience: I spent plenty of time enjoying the peaceful ambiance of this place, taking in the serene ocean views and clicking countless photos. It's a really amazing experience to stay here. Beautiful ocean view and unique location make it more special. First time we visited here was about 10 years ago and saw wonderful landscape and many koalas in this area, but that time we didn't stay in this accomodation. So this time we decided to stay one night here so we can have chance to explore more. Unlucky when we arrived was bad weather. But have chance to stay in this area after business hour still a special advantage. We have time to walk around freely and nobody around. The accomodation is old, but they keep it very clean, tidy, beautiful and have great stories with it. Much better than the photos we checked on booking website. They also offer many bread, nuts, jam and coffee as breakfast. Much more generous than I expected and definitely worth extra points. However there are still a few things that could be improved to make it better. We knew they don't have hair dryer and that night was freezed so we just took quick shower and didn't spend much water. But after me and my 2 kids finished shower then the whole house suddenly run out of water. My wife couldn't get shower, we couldn't wash hands and brush teeth, even cannot use toilet coz no water at all to flush toilet. So we could only wait until 6am then get water. Maybe that's because they used old rain water supply? I have no idea but anyway this should not happen, the price is not cheap actually and we didn't waste water but still can't get enough water. Fortunately the next morning we joined the lighthouse tour and it's really special and great experience. Very strong wind but you can see the view is really stunning, beautiful and unforgettable. The guide lady is friendly and professional, she helped us enjoy the lighthouse tour. After checked out we saw 4 koalas when on the way laave there. Overall we all agreed it's a good experience and special place to stay. Just hope the water supply could be more stable coz it's really annoying when run out the water.
