Carnarvon Gorge.. wow absolutely spectacular!! If you love nature, hiking, camping and a bit of travel and Carnarvon Gorge isn't on your bucket list.. then it's NEEDS to be!!
We've spent 1.5days hiking in 40+*c heat both days. Being prepared for the gorge is one thing but being really prepared is another and this is something that should NOT be under estimated!!!
Our 1/2day we knocked off Mickey Creek Gorge (+fork) followed by the rock pools for the kids and a cool off (high temp was 44.2*c)
After speaking to other experienced hikers they advised an early start, hike through the side attractions and straight to Cathedral Cave (3.5hrs - 9.1km one way, with 3kids under 12yrs) Then stop off at all the smaller and side gorges on the return although this will add extra time and added km to the return trip, but an absolutely spectacular and worthwhile experience nonetheless!
Samsung advised me I totaled 26.25km with 51floors in 9hrs but the preparedness of the hike was the issue. Taking 5L cold water, a small lunch, a few snacks and what I thought was good hiking shoes, was borderline wrong and left me cautious and aware of that reality as we walked out to find other hikers ill prepared and even one older gentleman getting walked out by paramedics from the 4+/-km point.
Hede my warning, be over prepared and don't take unnecessary risks as the closest evac could be as close as 6hrs away including the hike in or as far as 9hrs without the hike out.
I believe there are loads of pictures of Carnarvon Gorge on google maps but they give the size, beauty and extremes of the Gorges absolutely no credit they deserve. But i will post a few anyway.
Happy hiking!...
Read moreWOW! Best hike we have ever done! We did the main trail to the end and all the side branches clocking up about 30kms over about 9 hours. The main path is mostly flat with a few stairs and about 20ish river crossings with stepping stones, the aside paths can be a bit challenging. This can be done in one day or you can camp overnight!
The 5 locations that branch off which you MUST go into as they are all so different and unique are the Amphitheatre, the Moss Garden ( this was our favourite!), Ward’s Canyon , the Art Gallery ( you see some amazing aboriginal heritage art with lots of readable signs) and the Cathedral Cave which is located near the end of the gorge.
We also did the Boolimba Bluff which is a bit of a challenge with is being very steep but you can do this separately at another time

Read moreA great national park with stunning scenery, history and wildlife that is so easy to access with sealed roads. There is no camping in the gorge except for school holidays but there are several commercial resorts at the entrance to the park that offer a wide range of services accomodation options from glamping cabins to tent sites. There are a large number of beautiful walks ranging from short only a few hundred metres up to 18km and then there is the Carnarvon great walk. You need at least a few days if you plan to do most of the walks. The wildlife here is used to human activity and therefore easy to see and photograph. The rangers have done an amazing job with the infrastructure in the park but safety and welfare is your responsibility. Dont forget to take plenty of water and do not over estimate your ability. Some of these walks are quite long and over some rough terrain and a long way from help. There are some impressive rock art sites...
