What a beautiful place to visit! We had initially planned on walking down here after seeing Mt. Lofty Summit, but we ended up just walking here directly from the bus stop from Crafers (about a 20 min walk slightly uphill on a highway without sidewalks) due to limited public transportation to the summit. We entered the gate by the upper parking lot, which actually worked out well bc it was all downhill to get to the lake and lower car park. I’d rec this option bc you save the best sights for last, plus it’s much easier going downhill than up through this multilevel garden!
We visited in mid April, which was a great time to see the Fall colors! There were still lots of plants in bloom, which made it even more stunning.
We were hoping to see many of the smaller gardens, but the place is a maze (and the map provided is highly inaccurate—we ended up just foregoing the map and walking downhill in order to get to the lake), so we didn’t get to see as much as we’d hoped.
I’d recommend spending at least 2-3 hours here minimum. Also, have multiple backup plans to get here/depart if you are relying on public transportation. Neither Uber nor Didi had any drivers within range. Getting home was also a bit of a nightmare, as it started to drizzle and the only bus was an hour later in the town of Piccadilly (about a 15 min walk from the lower car park).
Also, FYI, no food/drink options here, although there were a few picnic tables and a lot of people were picnicking on the open turf areas.
Overall, def worth the visit, but I’m docking one star bc of the unfortunate map and very poor signage throughout the garden, as well as the lack of reliable and frequent public transportation. Wish the gardens had dedicated shuttles directly...
