This zoo is a treasure in Canberra. While most Australian cities have zoos, this one has a level of intimacy and maturity to it that is rarely replicated elsewhere in the country. There are rare and exotic species from all over the world, and it is evident that there is very good care taken to ensure that all the occupants and residents are healthy and in good spirits. The older, original portion of the zoo has the “lion’s share” of animal types, and you can see a lot while traveling a relatively short distance. Sometimes the pathways are a bit confusing here, and you might find yourself at a dead end here and there, but all in all it’s pretty great. The recent expansion area however, is simply stunning, and enables visitors to see animals in huge enclosures! It’s super quiet too in many places, and I have worked on my computer many times while just sitting on a bench in front of some giraffes or cheetahs, and have hardly been disturbed by the comings and going’s of people elsewhere. It’s a great escape for an afternoon! Calling itself a zoo AND aquarium is a bit of a misnomer, the Aquarium is just a single room with some large fish tanks, and can easily be missed or forgotten, but all in all, it is a good experience that should not be ignored in a visit to or around Canberra.

We went to this relatively small zoo between Christmas and New Year's, when it was perhaps at it busiest, but even so, there were far fewer crowds than at some zoos I've been to. Disappointing then, that several exhibits were closed - the otters, for example - for cleaning (which continued for hours), with something like 4 or 5 indicated as shut while we queued for tickets. At $48 each with old-person's discount, this was quite expensive. A downloadable map was available, and this was the same as the printed map we were given. It would have been great if the downloadable map hooked into my phone's GPS to indicate where we were, because signposting was often inadequate. Sanitation also needs attention, with queues for the hard-to-find toilets. Some enclosures featured animals so far away that photographs were a waste of effort without at least a 600mm lens, which most would not have had, and often there were only 2 animals in the enclosures - one male and one female. The lions, tigers, and rhinos, for example. One enclosure housed otters while their home was being cleaned, but after getting to the uppermost part of the enclosure (I had to walk in the opposite direction), the feeding was over and in any event, large bushes prevented anyone from actually looking down into their temporary home. So a waste of effort. The setup of the zoo seemed to mimic an IKEA store in that it was difficult to cut from one enclosure to another - you had to follow a circuit through the entire store. Sorry, zoo. If anyone has stressed or tired children, then they could be faced with a trying time getting them back to the exit and home. There are paths that permit rapid movement from one part of the zoo to another but these are reserved for staff. In all, an okay experience, but not one that I'm itching to repeat.

Disappointing overall experience. Found the flow of the pathways a little confusing (the provided 3D perspective styled map would make much more sense as a straight 2D view), and I'm usually great with navigation. Assortment of animals is OK, with notable stand outs being the big cats and primates - got to witness the male white lion roar, and saw the tigers up close to the barriers. Also the pygmy marmosets and meerkats are the cutest things ever! The aquarium is, to put it politely, underwhelming. Definitely not a selling point. Don't come expecting to much. Dated, lacklustre in variety of species. Café is in the same league as the aquarium. At midday, none of the hot food was ready - still heating and roughly 30 mins away - leaving only 3 packaged varieties of sandwich and a wrap in the fridge to choose from for lunch. This is on a Sunday on a long weekend. Add to this the 5 staff behind the counter seemed to be doing the work of 2 people between them. I was EXTREMELY disappointed, and my 4 y/o son is absolutely devastated, that the red pandas are NO LONGER on display. No mention of it on the website, at entry reception, not even on the signage inside the zoo. We are up from Melbourne, and I had promised him as a reward for behaving well on the long drive up that I would take him to see the red pandas (that he's obsessed about because of the film "Turning Red"). And barely an apology from staff when quizzed about it. So thank you very much for ruining a young boy's hopes and for the emotional distraught I've had to placate. All in all, it is over $100 spent between my partner, my son and myself on tickets, that I wish I still had in my pocket. I'll put it down as one of life's little regrets. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone visiting Australia.

We did the Awesome Roarsome tour and it was brilliant, getting in before the zoo opened was well worth the money paid. No crowds or noise and the zoo pretty much to ourselves. Our guide Megan was absolutely lovely, very knowledgeable and passionate about the animals and also a pretty good sense of humour. Feeding the animals was something my family and I will remember forever, I could have sat with the Tiger all day - we were so close (had to remember a few times I can't reach out and pat him !!). The hyenas were stunning, loved the Sun Bear and Cervil and the Meerkats and Otters were adorable, a bit of a shame Jake the white lion didn't want to come say hello but it was made up by having our brekky on the viewing platform alone watching him stride around his enclosure and listen to him roar. Thankyou for being so accommodating with the early access to the mobility scooter and thankyou from all of us for an amazing day. When you visit the zoo make sure you take the time to read the stories posted around the zoo of the previous animals and how they came to live there - inspiring and heartbreaking but shows the care provided by all the team at the zoo. We will definitely be back - thankyou again.

This review is mixed. Firstly I want to acknowledge the absolute stress and hiccup around adding my friend to my booking for the night tour - which is not a small investment. Jess made this happen for us and honestly was incredible and accommodating. The staff at the front counter...seriously do you a disservice. Travelling interstate we had tried to squeeze in a visit also at the aquarium and despite arriving 20 mins to close were told we couldn't go into the zoo, and when I asked to buy a red panda for my daughter was told it was around $140 without an offer to allow me in. I had to insist to be able to be able to come in and add to the zoo's retail sales for the day. All the dealing with the front entry team definitely did not match the service later received on the night tour. Jess was incredibly warm and insightful and was a wonderful guide for us sharing insights of the animals and the night tour is highly recommended as a truly special experience. I would have given this a five star had it not been such a struggle to have my friend added to our booking, and as I described needing to force a retail sale or over $100 in under 20 seconds flat.

My wife and I did the Wonders of wildlife experience during the recent school holidays. It was amazing. A whole 7 hour day of encounter after encounter. We were teamed up with Megan for the whole day and we just followed her around feeding and playing with the animals. It was just like having a friend on the inside spoiling you. She was super bubbly, nice, and informative, but also pretty casual and able to have a laugh. The zoo itself is fantastic. So big, and the amount of care and love given to the animals is next level. It was also fantastic to see the owner walking around and mingling with the guests. You can just tell he has an amazing passion for these animals. There's also the aquarium component which is small compared to the zoo, but is really nicely set out and beautiful to experience. The aquarium keeper has done a great job! If I were to suggest an improvement, the only thing I could think of is maybe adding some axolotls in the mix 😉 *cough* Ben *cough*. Was overall an incredible experience and when my 2 little boys are older, we will be returning with them.
