The DownsSteam tourist & railway museum is the hidden gem of Toowoomba. Located just outside of Toowoomba at Drayton (only 14 minutes from the city centre) It features the rollingstock they maintain and other memorabilia not only from Queensland Rail but from other railways. The museum is not just for train-buffs as well. I am a self-confessed train nut so I dragged my wife and son there. You could see they were none too impressed to be at just another rail yard. How wrong they were. We took the tour and you could see how happy they were that we went. The tour is great with our guide being both friendly and knowledgeable. The absolute highlight though is the "dreamtime" carriage. Make sure you get the guided tour to find out the remarkable story behind the transformation from a standard suburban carriage into a stunning work of art. I would fully recommend a morning spent at the DownsSteam museum as a must on your next trip up the range...

DownsSteam is one place in Toowoomba that is WELL WORTH A VISIT you will not be disappointed, Dan showed us through and gave us a lot of information we never knew about the Railway System hopefully to begin within a couple of years. Railway tours of the Darling Downs is the challenge DownsStream are trying to achieve and I will certainly be going on that when it happens. Weddings and other events are held here and there is a SECRET carriage which is MIND BLOWING in itself. Thankyou Dan we truly appreciate you letting us take photographs but especially NOT of the SECRET carriage which I consider to be PRICELESS, it is absolutely brilliant in every way. Needs more community support and Government Funding to ensure the tireless work the enthusiastic volunteers do on their own time, amazing place to visit. A MUST SEE if in Toowoomba or...

We went during a balmy rainy weekend and I needed to settle my babyladies immediately. There is a $5 donation for adults and you're ready for the sights and sounds of actual steam trains. The volunteers were very welcoming and all my train crazy children's questions were answered patiently and in a language they all understand.

If you have extra budget, DO NOT LEAVE without riding the Drayton-Wyreema train. It's also cheaper to pay there instead of booking online. There is no platform when you reach the destination in Wyreema but the rural sights of golden fields, wild rabbits and wallabies, littered by rubbish from the back of some houses, are a sight my city girls can't get enough of.

We didn't leave until we bought the train whistle and their enamel mugs from the lovely souvenir...

The Establishment is worth the visit - $5 donation box at the door. However, I dont highly recommend the Super Saturday steam train ride at $40+. Its novel for children and many of the older generation connected and shared stories from the past, however, for a pair of adult aged adventurers, we found the ride a little long and non eventful - scenery nothing overly spectacular, no more than what you see driving down the highway. On top of that, the train broke down and delayed our return by 20minutes.... so maybe be prepared for a not so wow factor.

A must do when visiting Toowoomba. Labour of love for a very dedicated team of volunteers with all skills put to work. What has been built out of a paddock to fully functional tour is incredible. If you are a lover of the railway, of times gone by or just the shear scale of what has been achieved, this is the place to visit. Take the tour with a volunteer or you will miss out so much information and the amazing dreamtime carriage! The scones and coffee are a must. All proceeds are returned to the project. $5 admission for adults as of Oct 2020.
