All the superlatives. Shut the Gate really lived up to the hype. From the moment you're met at the cellar door by the very cool decor and style, this place impresses. The staff were attentive and friendly making for a very pleasant and positive experience. Nothing oozes confidence like talking about other wines one may be familiar with to draw comparison with their own. Well played, a lot of cellar doors avoid this move. The complimentary cheese and cracker platter was a pleasant addition too.
The wine list. Well, rather than spoil all the fun, I'll let you discover it for yourself. I can say that the quality is exceptional and even then, a couple of bottles stood out above the rest. A special mention goes to the Grenache and the Pinot Rosé. Brilliant.
The pricing is too low. I'll just say that. That's not a complaint or criticism, but some wino lovers shop by price thinking that's where the quality is. Not here folks, dive right in.
In summary, loved it and will be back. Brilliant stuff Shut the Gate....
Read moreVisited in August 2019 as part of a joint family Bday trip. Left a bad taste in my mouth with the welcome we received and the behaviour that transpired during our visit. We had three small children with us and were made to feel very unwelcome! Totally inappropriate! I was very upset following the incident and will certainly NOT be returning or advising anyone else with a family to do so. My partner is a wine collector and we had visited Shut the Gate before at their old venue and had a lovely time so I was very embarrassed having raved about it to my family and then exposing them to this kind of overbearing and indifferent behaviour by a mature age staff member. Interestingly following our experience we ran into three other parties of people, one local and two visiting, at separate events who had similar negative experiences with this winery's staff with regards to families and young children. Perhaps a change of attitude is in order? Will not be giving this establishment any business in future....
Read moreA well deserved 5 star review. We were recommended this winery by a local, it is now the favourite winery we have visited in the Clare Valley. The ambience and atmosphere was quirky , charming and idiosyncratic. Beautifully decorated inside and out. We were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The wines were really unique and delicious, and we too were treated to complementary cheese and crackers. We are travelling with our Beagle Cross Max, who was as was made to feel as welcome as we were. Thankyou for that.🥰 Treat yourself to a truly unique Clare Valley experience. We purchased a bottle of 2022 Gewurtztraminer, something new to me and albeit a great discovery. Thankyou for your wonderful hospitality, we highly recommend this winery, and yes we...
