Pink Lake Dimboola is an excellent rest area if you are driving on a road trip between Melbourne and Adelaide. It's within Victoria but situates at about the midway between these two capital cities.
There are car park spaces, toilets, shelters, picnic tables and rubbish bins etc. If you are looking for a good rest area, this could be one of the best rest area along the Western Highway / Dukes Highway as most of other rest areas are poorly designed, without reasonable facilities.
Pink Lake is just 3 minutes walk from the rest area. Pink Lake might be pink when filled up with water, typically after raining seasons between June and August (as far as I know the best timing to visit is September and October). I visited the Pink Lake in mid-Autumn (April), it was dried up already and without any water. To be honest, it's just a white/light pink salt lake that you can walk through most of the surface. I was unsure if it was completely dry everywhere as I didn't walk to the far end opposite to the entrance.
It was not smelly, and no flies surrounded me. Perhaps it will have a bad smell when it is wet, and the interaction of the algae and bacteria in the salt environment produces the bad smell and pink colour.
Anyway, it's worth paying a short visit / pit stop if you are passing-by while driving along the Western Highway. If you come here merely to see the pink lake, you will probably be disappointed.
I wonder the chance of seeing a pink lake is not high and the effect was not great for most of the times. The pink colour depends on many factors, such as water level in the pink lake, salt concentration, algae and bacteria interaction, sunlight effect and angle of sight (using a drone might be able to shoot from a...
Read moreWe visited Pink Lake Dimboola on 25 December 2024, during the peak of summer, with temperatures reaching a scorching 39°C. This marks the third pink lake I’ve visited, following the stunning Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake in Perth and Lake Tyrrell in Victoria. Compared to those, Pink Lake Dimboola isn’t the most impressive, but it still offers a unique experience.
The lake had a faint pinkish hue, though the many footprints left by visitors took away some of its natural beauty. The site is well-equipped for a short visit, with parking and a toilet available. There’s also a tap near the toilet, which might be fresh water, but it’s primarily used by visitors to wash their legs after walking on the lake. The walk from the small parking lot to the lake is short and easy, making it convenient for everyone.
While Pink Lake Dimboola’s colors aren’t as vibrant as Hutt Lagoon Pink Lake or Lake Tyrrell, standing on the lake and enjoying the quiet environment still made it a unique stop. It’s worth a visit if you’re passing through, but it doesn’t quite compare to the more striking pink lakes...
