Lake Alexandra was not a freshwater lake before 1940, it was a tidal estuary. In 1939-1940 tidal barrages were built to try and prevent salt water from coming up the Murray. Since then the estuary has become a silted up backwater. It is not even natural, it actually reduces wildlife and various special fish species in the area.
Not only that, large flows of freshwater from the Murray Darling system, fed by the Snowy River IRRIGATION scheme, are wasted to maintain the freshwater.
