I recently visited a remarkable 19th-century wooden suspension bridge that serves as a vital link between two distinct villages. Architecturally, the bridge is a feast for the eyes, boasting castle-like towers that lend an aura of grandiosity and historical depth to the structure.

From an engineering standpoint, the single-lane vehicular design is quite fascinating. However, drivers should exercise caution when crossing, as there is no traffic light system to coordinate movement from both ends. Despite this, the view from the bridge is absolutely breathtaking, offering a panoramic overlook of the river below.

Pedestrians should note that the bridge is not particularly foot-traffic friendly due to its narrow pathways. However, if you’re driving, finding a parking spot won’t be an issue as there is ample space available beside the bridge. I easily located the site using Google Maps, making it quite accessible for anyone interested in exploring this architectural marvel.

Overall, the bridge offers a unique blend of history, engineering, and aesthetics, making it a must-visit. Just remember to proceed with caution if you’re...

Australia's last surviving wooden iconic suspension bridge named after NSW's Governor Lord Hampden (1895-1899). Besides the 28 steel cables which was manufactured from England, all wooden timber and sandstone materials used to build this masterpiece was sourced from within the Shire local area itself.

Completed in 1898, by 2002 the National Trust listed the bridge as an Industrial heritage site. You must see it while it still stands strong!

The river access barbecue area hold sufficient car parking spaces with public toilets. There's a beautiful walking trail that will take you around the lake itself and down the lake where you will see the bridge from a different angle through stones in the river if you wish.

There are a few lookout points scatered through out it's walking trail where you can absorb all natures lush green views and feel at peace with one's self! The River flows magically. Enjoy its serenity!

Dog friendly! We also visited the fenced off tiny animal farm that held goats, chicken and roosters.

Its historical significances was awe inspiring! One children, adults and your furry 4 legged friends...

A satisfying experience overall. The bridge itself is an interesting piece of architecture, showcasing the typical characteristics of suspension bridges. The views from the bridge are nice, especially if you enjoy nature. I appreciated the effort that has gone into maintaining the area, but I did notice a lack of amenities nearby. There are no cafes or picnic spots, which could make it less appealing for families or those looking to spend more time here. The parking situation could also use some improvement, as I had to search for a spot that was a bit far from the entrance. Despite these drawbacks, walking across the bridge was enjoyable. It’s a peaceful spot, making it suitable for a quick escape from busier tourist attractions. If you’re passing through the area, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the view and snap a few photos. Just be prepared for a brief visit rather than an all-day excursion. Overall, a solid experience without being...

Hampden Bridge No:875 Moss Vale Rd (B73) Kangaroo Valley that crosses the Kangaroo River is an absolutely beautiful area!!! Thomas Loveridge (family) on my late mothers side! Thomas Loveridge and Herbert Hudson began construction in 1895 to replace the old timber truss bridge and was written that only 6 days after the superb building of Hampden Bridge, the old timber bridge washed away... Hampden Bridge was designed by Ernest Macartney de Burgh and was an assistant engineer for the bridges. The Hampden was open to the public in the early part of 1898... Some 90 years later, I was here with scouts 1982-85, passing multiple challenges in canoe survival and rescue, Orienteering + more... Return again with my wife 39 years later to show her around, and I can say the Valley hasn't changed much still as beautiful as ever, just a little more popular nowadays... Great place for swimming and for family picnics or to camp a night or two, toilet facilities available.

Beautiful Old Bridge. Some history below.... A well-known local tourist attraction, Hampden Bridge features four large crenellated turrents made of locally quarried sandstone. It is 252 feet (76.8 m) long and one lane wide. The bridge forms part of the Moss Vale Road. Hampden Bridge is the only surviving suspension bridge from the colonial period in New South Wales;and is the oldest and only timber suspension bridge still carrying vehicular traffic still in operation within Australia. The bridge's medieval tower style is an example of the gothic revival architecture popular in late nineteenth-century Australia. This elaborate form, and the relatively sophisticated structural design of the span, reflect the importance of this river crossing at the time of construction: the Cambewarra Road (now the Moss Vale Road) was then a major route from Sydney to the south coast of NSW.
